Women’s Tennis Beats Bucknell to Push Win Streak to Double-Digits

Navy Improves to 2-0 in Patriot League Standings, Amspacher-Philemon Extends Singles Winning Streak to 12 Matches

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Going undefeated in its opening weekend of Patriot League action, the Navy women's tennis team (15-4, 2-0 PL) pushed its winning streak to 10 consecutive matches with a 7-0 sweep of Bucknell (7-9, 0-4 PL) on Sunday at the Fluegel-Moore Tennis Stadium.

Posting their longest win streak since an 11-match undefeated stretch in 2020, the Midshipmen were highlighted by a pair of sophomore singles performances. As Emma Gu took down the league's defending fall champion Abby Platt, Peyton Amspacher-Philemon extended her personal winning streak to 12-straight contests.

Navy set the tone for the day by securing the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead, as the Mids' No. 2 pair of junior Julia Lee and sophomore Grace Li rolled past Jaycie Mair and Mariana Shulman, 6-1, before Gu and fellow sophomore Molly Bellia clinched the point at the No. 3 court by defeating Cameron King and Natalie Devraj, 6-3. Bucknell salvaged doubles play at the No. 1 flight when Platt and Riley Jennings topped Amspacher-Philemon and junior Anna Jordaan in a 6-2 decision.

Navy then continued a dominant start to league singles play, sweeping all six flights. After Li made quick work of Tori Allen at the No. 3 spot with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout, Bellia followed shortly after at No. 4 by besting Mirra Manolov, 6-4, 6-2. Amspacher-Philemon then officially clinched the team win for Navy in the No. 5 position, dispatching Mair by a 6-2, 6-4 score.

The Mids closed out the remaining courts with Jordaan fighting off Natalie Devraj for a 7-5, 7-5 win on the sixth court, while freshman Nicole Fu handled Jennings, 6-2, 6-4, at the No. 2 spot. Gu then completed the singles sweep at the top spot by outlasting Platt in an pro-set tiebreaker, 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8).

Head Coach Keith Puryear Comments
"A good performance today over another quality Patriot League team. Bucknell pushed us in every match, forcing some tight matches for the ladies. It was great to have the opportunity to play outdoors today. To go from indoors yesterday, it might have been a little uncomfortable at times, but that will prepare us well for what's ahead for us this spring. We must now focus on the week ahead and a tough Delaware squad next up."

Match Notes
• Navy moved to 20-2 in the all-time series with Bucknell, winning 20 straight in the series.
• This marks the sixth winning streak of 10-or-more matches in program history.
• The Mids' last double-digit winning streak was the 11-match run from Feb. 8-March 8, 2020.
• Philemon's 12-match singles win streak is the longest in program history since Emily Tannenbaum's own 12-match winning streak last season (March 1-April 25).
• Li pushed her own singles winning streak to eight matches, marking her second time this season winning eight-straight singles contests.
