Navy Women's Basketball Sweeps Patriot League Major Awards

Barnett-Gay Named Player & Defensive Player, Mesuch Rookie and Taylor Coach of the Year

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - On the heels of a historic regular season, the Navy women's basketball team was rewarded by the Patriot League with a historic clean sweep of the conference's top-four major awards. Announced by the league on Friday afternoon, the Mids' star guard Zanai Barnett-Gay was recognized as the 2025-26 Patriot League Player and Defensive of the Year, while standout freshman Zoe Mesuch was honored as the Patriot League Rookie of the Year with Tim Taylor and his staff earning the Patriot League Coach/Staff of the Year accolade. This momentous achievement, a clean sweep of the top-four major women's basketball awards has only been done once before in the history of the conference as Army secured the feat after the 2012-13 season.

In addition to the major awards announcement, the 2025-26 All-Patriot League First, Second and Third Teams were released on Friday. As the Player of the Year, Barnett-Gay headlined the five players on the first team, while Mesuch was one of five second team honorees. Julianna Almeida joined the list of high achievers as the 2024-25 Patriot League Rookie of the Year was one of six players named to the All-Patriot League Third Team for her efforts this season.

Coming off a season in which the Mids ran off a program-record 11-straight league victories, finished with a program-best 16 wins overall versus league foes and captured the league's outright regular season title for the first time since 2013-14, Navy was wholeheartedly endorsed by the league's coaches with all four of the conferences major awards. One year after being narrowly edged out of the Player of the Year honor and getting the league's Defensive Player of the Year accolade, Barnett-Gay became Navy's first-ever Patriot League Player of the Year and just the fourth-ever player in league history to sweep both the Player and Defensive Player of the Year in the same season. In the 22 years that the top defensive player earned recognition with a standalone honor for the league, Barnett-Gay is the fifth player to collect two Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year nods.

Mesuch's Rookie of the Year honor extends the Mids' stronghold on the prize as Navy has now gone back-to-back-to-back with earning the top rookie award as previously Barnett-Gay and Almeida went home with the honors in 2024 and 2025, respectively. A run of three straight Rookie of the Years from the same program has only happened twice before in the conference's 35 years of existence, Navy (1994-1996) and Bucknell (2014-2016).

Tim Taylor and his staff of Associate Head Coach Marlena Tremba and assistants Mac Campbell, Faith Randolph, Sam Brunelle and Daniel Villarreal collected the newly-renamed "Staff of the Year" award for the fourth time in program history as Joe Sanchez was Coach of the Year in 1995 before Stefanie Pemper earned the moniker in 2011 and 2014.

Head Coach Tim Taylor & Staff: 2025-26 Patriot League Staff of the Year
Since taking over the program during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in April of 2020, Taylor has been on a mission to return the Navy program to the championship-level heights of the early/mid 2010's. Reaching rock bottom with an 1-29 record in 2022-23, but never losing hope or sight of their ultimate goal, Taylor and his staff turned the program around with three straight winning seasons with a 13-win increase in 2023-24, a five-win increase in 2024-25 and currently a two-win increase in 2025-26. The Mids' 21 overall wins are tied for sixth-most in program history, while their 16 conference victories are the most-ever for a Navy squad. This current campaign has seen Taylor and his staff knock off an SEC team, win 11 straight Patriot League contests, outscore teams by an average of 10.3 points (14.7 points in conference play) and earn the program's first regular season title since 2013-14. Navy heads into the upcoming Patriot League Tournament as the number one overall seed and will host tournament action at Alumni Hall as long as the team is active. First up will be a quarterfinal matchup against the winner of #8 Boston University and #9 American, who play on Saturday afternoon.
