ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's tennis team (23-17, 5-1) didn't drop a set in posting a 7-0 victory over Colgate (6-12, 2-5) Sunday morning at the USNA Tennis Courts in Annapolis. The Mids also rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Howard (1-12) 4-2 Sunday afternoon on The Yard.
Navy 7, Colgate 0
Navy began the morning by posting 6-2 wins at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles to take the early lead.
Herrick Legaspi and
Charlie Spencer defeated Aidan Chung and Tim Viding at the top of the order, with
J.J. Etterbeek and
Tommy Kim beating Will Bulger and Aidan Lee at the bottom.
The middle match at No. 2 ended with the Navy pairing of
Aniketh Ayinala and
Jake Young leading Parker McGowan and Tim Vargas by the score of 5-2 when play was halted.
Spencer tallied Navy's second point of the day when he defeated Vargas by the score of 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. That was followed by Young posting a 6-2, 6-2 win over McGowan at the No. 5 flight. Legaspi's 6-0, 7-5 victory over Lee at No. 1 singles accounted for Navy's fourth team point.
Ayinala defeated Bulger, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2, Etterbeek won a 6-1, 7-5 match over Adam Fink at No. 6 and Kim registered a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Chung at No. 4 in the remaining matches.
Navy 4, Howard 2
Howard won the two doubles matches that finished to take the 1-0 advantage. Alexander Monagan and Shawn Mitchell Yon posted a 6-2 victory in their No. 3 doubles match over Zachary Quattro and
Daniel Seo in the first match to finish. The Bison clinched the point when their No. 1 tandem of Nathan Bermeo and Michael Major Jr. defeated
Lachlan Buckingham and
Ethan Garcia by the score of 6-4.
The No. 2 match between Navy's
George Cutone and
Steve Nguyen and Howard's Kendrick Lash and Marcus Weekes was ted at 5-5 when it was stopped.
Howard then saw Monagan defeat
Kai Edwards, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 6 singles.
Quattro answered with a 6-3, 0-6, 6-3 win over Bermeo at the No. 5 fight to slice the margin in half. Garcia tied the match when he won his No. 4 match against Lash by the score of 5-7, 6-1, 6-1. Cutone defeated Major, 7-6, 7-6, to give the Mids the lead, then Nguyen defeated Weeks, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 2 singles to secure the outcome.
Buckingham was leading Yon, 6-4, 6-7, 4-0, in their No. 3 singles match when it was halted.
