Most Recent Navy-Cornell-Syracuse Matchup: April 19, 2025 at Annapolis
Competing on the Severn River for its only home meet of the 2025 schedule, the No. 20 Navy heavyweight rowing team faced stiff opposition from No. 9 Syracuse and No. 15 Cornell throughout Saturday's five-race slate. The highly ranked Orange collected victories from its top-four boats, while the Midshipmen were able to send their fans home happy as their sixth varsity eight pulled an upset and was victorious in the fifth varsity eight event.
The Goes Trophy contest took center stage with a three-way battle between Navy, Syracuse and Cornell's first varsity eight crews. All three boats got off to a strong start, though the Mids were the early leader with a slight advantage through the 250-meter mark. With all of the teams within striking distance of the lead, the Orange found that next gear first and broke out to an advantage before the quarter buoy and led for the final 1,500 meters of racing. Syracuse earned the Goes Trophy victory with a time of 6:07.0 ahead of Cornell at 6:13.5 and Navy at 6:19.2.
In addition to retaining the Goes Trophy, Syracuse also earned the Stagg Cup for the team points title on Saturday.
What's at Stake
Goes Trophy
Dating back to 1955 and presented to the winner of the heavyweight varsity race between Navy, Cornell and Syracuse, the trophy was created by Clifford "Tip" Goes (Syracuse - 1914) to honor Jim Ten Eyck of Syracuse, Charles Courtney of Cornell and Richard Glendon of Navy. All-time, Navy holds a slim edge with 27 wins versus 25 for Cornell and 16 for Syracuse. The Orange have won the last five Goes Trophy contests.
Stagg Cup
The Stagg Cup is presented to the program that scores the most points in the combined action between the V8, 2V8 and 3V8 boats.
Last Time Out: versus Princeton, April 6 in Annapolis
The Navy heavyweight rowing team dropped a four-race series of action to Princeton on Saturday morning. Taking on a team that finished the 2025 season ranked in the top-five nationally, the Mids (0-2) were unable to match the speed set down by the Tigers (4-0) as the visitors swept the competition on Navy's home waters of the Severn River.
The event opened with the first varsity eights racing for the right to celebrate with the Navy-Princeton Cup. The Tigers were revving high from the start as they came out of the blocks with a strong start and had four-plus seats on the Mids within the first 60 seconds of the race. Princeton continued taking seats on Navy and had an open-water advantage before the contest reached the 750-meter mark. The Tigers cruised in the second half of the race and took the 5:56.2 to 6:14.4 decision over the Mids.
