Navy Defeats Colgate, 4-0, in League’s Quarterfinal Round, Amspacher-Philemon Notches Fifth-Straight Singles Win

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Pushing its winning streak to five straight matches, the second-seeded Navy women's tennis team battled to a 4-0 sweep over No. 7 seed Colgate in the quarterfinal round of the Patriot League Championship on Friday evening at the Bucknell Varsity Tennis Courts in Lewisburg, Pa.

With the victory, Navy improves to 21-5 overall and punched its ticket to a semifinal rematch against rival Army, while Colgate ends its season with a 7-12 record.

The Midshipmen seized early momentum by claiming the doubles point, as sophomore Peyton Amspacher-Philemon and junior Anna Jordaan opened the contest with a dominant 6-2 win over Carina Cristobal and Sasha Herman at No. 2.

Junior Julia Lee and sophomore Grace Li then clinched the opening point for Navy in the third flight, defeating Avery Isaac and Rebecca Hess, 6-4, while the No. 1 court saw Navy junior Olivia Fermo and freshman Nicole Fu go unfinished against Colgate's Amelia Galin and Sophia Montero, with the Raiders leading by a 4-3 margin.

Navy carried its momentum into singles play, quickly securing three straight-set victories at the top and bottom of the lineup to seal the match. Amspacher-Philemon was the first off the court, dismantling Herman, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 5 spot to extend Navy's lead to 2-0, while rookie Anna Wiskowski followed shortly after with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Caroline Brown in the sixth flight.

Sophomore Emma Gu then delivered the decisive blow for the Mids at the No. 1 position, clinching the team victory by downing Galin, 6-2, 6-0.

Head Coach Keith Puryear Comments
"Colgate played inspired ball today. We congratulate their coaches and team on a good season. There were a few things that we tried to emphasize this week in practice and we liked the way the ladies responded today. Tomorrow's match against Army will provide a good challenge for us.
