ITHACA, N.Y. – The No. 15 Navy heavyweight rowing team participated in a quartet of races versus No. 9 Syracuse and No. 13 Cornell on Saturday at the Big Red's home course on the Cayuga Inlet. With the Goes Trophy on the line for the victor of the first varsity eight contest and Stagg Cup up for grabs in the team points battle, the Orange retained both pieces of hardware with a perfect four-for-four day. The Mids' effort on Saturday was highlighted by a runner-up result by its fourth varsity eight crew.

The order of racing on Saturday saw the third varsity eight crews get out on the water first. Syracuse was the class of the field and used a strong opening sprint to earn the wire-to-wire win. Navy stayed in contact with Cornell over the majority of the 2,000 meters, but lost seats down the stretch and had to settle for third place. The Orange were victorious with a time of 5:41.0, 3.7 seconds ahead of the Big Red's 5:44.7. The Mids completed their piece with a 5:51.3 time.
Next up was the Goes Trophy contest in the first varsity eight classification. The closest matchup between all three crews, Syracuse once again used a strong start to earn an early advantage over its opposition. Cornell and Navy were competitive throughout though the Big Red slowly crept out on the Mids over the second half of the race earning a slight bit of open water over the final quarter of the race. At the finish line, the Orange improved to 2-0 on the day with a 5:32.5 to 5:37.2 victory over the Big Red with the Mids clocking in third at 5:42.4.
Syracuse continued its stranglehold on the top of the leaderboard with a dominant start-to-finish performance in the second varsity eight competition. Straight forward from the start, the Orange out-paced the second-place Big Red by 12.3 seconds, 5:37.7 to 5:50.0 and the Mids by 23.8 seconds as Navy's 2V8 posted a 6:01.5 time.
The Mids secured their first runner-up result of the day in the fourth varsity eight race. With Syracuse on its way to completing its perfect four-for-four regatta, Navy had a battle on its hands with Cornell over the trek down the Cayuga Inlet. Trailing by two-to-three seats at the quarter mark of the race, the Mids stayed within that same margin for most of the next 1,000 meters before turning it on down the stretch and pulling even and edging ahead ever so slightly at the finish line with a 0.5 margin over the Big Red, 6:01.5 to 6:02.0. Â
Navy will close out its regular season next Saturday, April 25 with a pair of matchups in Philadelphia. Initially the Mids will participate in a three-team contest versus the Penn Quakers and Harvard Crimson with the Adams Cup on the line before laying down a second 2,000-meter piece later on in the day in a one-on-one matchup versus Drexel.
