Men’s Tennis Beats Colgate in League Tournament Opener

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Charlie Spencer and Herrick Legaspi teamed up for a victory in the deciding doubles match and then each won singles matches during a 4-0 victory by the Navy men's tennis team over Colgate, Friday afternoon at the Ulrich Varsity Tennis Courts in Bethlehem, Pa.  The match between the second-seeded Mids (25-17) and the seventh-seeded Raiders (7-12) was played in the quarterfinal round of the Patriot League Tournament.

The victory advances Navy to a Saturday semifinal round match against third-seeded Army.  That match is slated to begin at 3 p.m.

"It was a great win for the guys to move into the next round of the tournament," said Navy head coach Chris Garner.

Navy won the doubles point thanks to a pair of victories sandwiched around a win by Colgate.

Navy's No. 3 team of Lachlan Buckingham and Jake Young didn't lose a game in quickly defeating Witt Bulger and Aidan Lee.  The Raiders held 5-4 leads at the each of the two remaining flights, and claimed a 6-4 win by their No. 2 tandem of Parker McGowan and Tim Vargas over Aniketh Ayinala and Tommy Kim.  The No. 1 match saw Navy's Legaspi and Spencer win three-straight games to defeat Aidan Chung and Tim Viding by the score of 7-5 and give the opening point to the Mids.

"The teams had good starts in doubles, but Colgate played some inspiring tennis to get back into them," said Garner.  "Ultimately Charlie and Herrick played well at the end of their set to take the point."

Navy then won a trio of straight-set singles matches to close out play.  Spencer picked up his second win of the day with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Vargas at No. 3 singles.  Steve Nguyen gave the Mids their third point when he defeated Adam Fink by the score of 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 6 flight.  The team's fourth and final point was earned by Legaspi with his 6-2, 6-3 win over Lochlan Seth.

In the remaining matches, Ayinala held a 6-3, 3-4 lead on Lee at No. 2, Kim was in front of Chung 6-1, 4-5 at No. 4 and J.J. Etterbeek held a 6-4, 4-2 advantage on McGowan.

"We again had good starts in the singles matches as we won the first set in all six matches," said Garner.  "Charlie, Steve, Herrick and J.J. all used the momentum to build commanding leads in their second sets."
