ANNAPOLIS, Md. – After tallying Navy's opening point in this past weekend's Star-match victory, sophomore
Emma Gu was named the Patriot League Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Gu was crucial in the Midshipmen's 4-2 win over rival Army on Saturday, as she put Navy on the board with a dominant 6-3, 6-2 victory over Madison Smith at the first flight.
Her win started a streak of three-straight singles victories for the Mids that gave them a 3-1 lead, as fellow sophomores
Peyton Amspacher-Philemon (No. 5) and
Grace Li (No. 3) followed by defeating their opponents. Classmate
Molly Bellia clinched the Navy victory at the fourth court after Army took the No. 6 singles match.
Gu is now 22-11 in singles play this season, going 12-6 on the spring with a 7-4 record at the top flight and a 3-1 league mark. Her 43 career singles wins also lead all active Navy players.
The award marks Gu's first weekly league honor of her career and the Mids' fifth weekly accolade of the season after freshman
Nicole Fu claimed the award on Jan. 27, sophomore
Peyton Amspacher-Philemon notched the honor on Feb. 10, junior
Olivia Fermo nabbed the distinction on Feb. 17 and sophomore
Grace Li received it on March 17.
Navy will continue league play when it hosts Loyola on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
