CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Navy junior Bill Schmermund (Holmdel, N.J.) improved his record to 2-0 at the NISRA Team Championship, however, the 12th-ranked Navy squash team fell in the semifinal round of the Hoehn Division main draw Saturday afternoon to Denison, 8-1.
The Mids, who boasted a 17-5 record in the regular-season, will take on Bowdoin in the division's consolation (third-place) game Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
Schmermund arose victorious in a five-set affair with Denison's Nick Johnson. After taking the first set with a 9-6 score, Schmermund fell behind 2-1 when Johnson scored 9-6 and 9-0 victories. Schmermund brought home Navy's lone victory when he took sets four and five by respective 9-5 and 9-6 scores.
"Bill played an exceptional match today," said Navy head coach Craig Dawson. "He really picked up the intensity when it mattered the most."
