•Navy vs. Army Results
WEST POINT, N.Y. - Navy senior Joshua Sink (Welcome, N.C.) second-place finish on a sloppy West Point Golf Course proved to be not enough as Army edged Navy 27-28 in men's cross country action on Friday afternoon.
Each squad placed its scoring-five runners within the overall top-10. The Black Knights owned first, third, sixth, eighth and ninth-place results overall, while the Midshipmen finished second, fourth, fifth, seventh and tenth. Only a .72 second difference existed between Army's ninth-place runner, Faraz Bala (Snohomish, Wash.), and Navy's tenth-place runner, Maksudul Ali (Clarksburg, Md.), which allowed the host Black Knights to take away a one-point victory.
"Our guys ran their hearts out today," said head coach Al Cantello. "This meet was held in the most adverse conditions for both teams. They did everything they could do."
For the fifth-consecutive race, Sink led all Navy finishers in crossing the finish line. Sink covered the 8k course in 27:42.17, only 12.10 seconds off Army's Philip Sakala's (Las Cruces, N.M.) first-place showing. The Navy senior boasted the team's top time in last year's 25-30 Star Meet victory over Army in Annapolis.
Senior team captain Ty Rose (Germantown, Tenn.) registered the Mids' second-best time, fourth overall, with a mark of 27:59.94. Sophomore John Kress (Colorado Springs, Colo.) soon followed Rose in fifth-place with a 28:01.07 time.
Junior Adam Craig (Commerce, Mich.) registered the next-best Navy time as he crossed the finish line in 28:08.94 for seventh-place. However, Army's Michael Klueber (Hillsborough, N.J.) finished eighth, which set up for the razor-thin finish.
With both teams tied at 18 points after the first eight runners, Bala covered his home course in 28:21.98, just ahead of Ali's mark of 28:22.70 to give the host Black Knights the one-point margin.
The one-point difference is the second-closest among the 68 all-time meetings between the two squads. On this date 10 years ago, Navy and Army tied with 28 points apiece in the annual Star Meet at the USNA Cross Country Course.
Friday's setback marked only the second in the previous nine races against Army. The last loss came in 2003, a 25-30 decision at Army's West Point Golf Course. Despite Friday's loss, the Mids maintain a 41-26-1 all-time advantage over the Black Knights.
Navy next begins to prepare for the Patriot League Championship held at Lehigh's Goodman Campus on Saturday, Oct. 29 starting at 11 a.m. Last season, Navy placed second among the eight schools at league championship hosted by Bucknell.
