Final Stats

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The freshmen trio of Sally Bakewell (St. John's, Fla.), Jennie Spencer (Smithburg, W. Va.) and Kelly Zahalka (Richmond, Va.) combined to win seven individual events to help the Navy women's swimming and diving team record a 182-112 victory over Johns Hopkins, Saturday afternoon in Lejeune Hall. The Midshipmen improved their record to 3-0 on the season, while the Blue Jays lost in their season opening meet.

"I was very pleased with how our athletes performed today," said Navy women's swimming head coach John Morrison. "We put the girls through an extremely difficult week of practice, but they fought through their fatigue to post very good times. George Kennedy always has a very talented Johns Hopkins team, so we knew we would have to perform well to end up with the victory."

Navy won the opening event of the meet, the 200 medley relay, then saw Kate Hansen record a 9:30.25 to win the 800 freestyle for Johns Hopkins. The Mids answered by winning the next four events to begin to pull away from the Blue Jays.

Navy's string of victories began with Bakewell posting a 2:12.61 to win the 200 freestyle, which was followed by Spencer recording a 1:06.52 to win the 100 backstroke by over two seconds. Aubra Thomas (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) next won the 100 breaststroke for Navy in a time of 1:14.39, then Zahalka recorded a 2:22.17 to post a three-second victory in the 200 fly.

Navy's streak of victories came to an end as Kristin Cunningham won the 50 free in a time of 27.90 for the Blue Jays, but Rachel Gray (So., Latrobe, Pa.) won the 100 free in a time of 1:00.44 to begin another run of four-straight victories by Navy. After Gray's one-half second victory, Spencer won the 200 back (2:24.50), Zahalka won the 200 breast (2:42.72) and Bakewell placed first in the 400 free (4:36.89).

Cunningham picked up her second victory of the day by recording a 1:06.91 to win the 100 fly, then Zahalka closed the individual event portion of the meet with a four-second win in the 200 individual medley (2:24.12). The final event of the day, the 400 free relay, was also won by the Mids.

Navy will take to the road for the first time this season when the Mids compete at UMBC next Saturday starting at 2:30 p.m.
