Loretto, Pa. - After Navy took a 51-43 lead with seven minutes to play, Saint Francis closed the game on a 21-5 run to defeat the Mids, 64-56, Friday night in Loretto, Pa.
"Turnovers really hurt us down the stretch," said Navy head coach Tom Marryott. "We had a lot of empty possessions in the second half in which we could have extended the lead, but didn't get shots off."
Saint Francis also enjoyed a large advantage at the free throw line over the final 20 minutes of play. Navy was whistled for 14 second half fouls, while Saint Francis was called for just five fouls in the second half. The Red Flash made 11-of-12 free throws after halftime, while Navy was 5-of-8 from the line.
Scoring points of any kind was a struggle for the Mids after halftime. Navy held a 39-36 at intermission, thanks to shooting 51.9 percent from the field, but was held to just 17 points during the second half.
Navy totaled 13 times in the second half, including a trio of offensive fouls over the final four minutes and 22 turnovers in the game, while Saint Francis tallied just nine turnovers in the game.
The setback marred a great effort from Carly Meyer (Sr., Orlando, Fla.), who scored 28 points, grabbed eight boards and finished one block shy of tying the Navy single-game record with five swats.
Navy fell to 2-5 on the year, while Saint Francis improved to 3-3.
Navy returns to Alumni Hall Monday when the Mids play host to Georgetown in a 5 p.m. game.
