ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's soccer team (14-4-2) celebrated senior day with a 3-1 win over Howard (4-10-2) on Sunday afternoon at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
"It was nice day all-around for our seniors," said Navy head coach Carin Gabarra. "This group has been a huge part of our program over the last four years and today was a fitting sendoff with both Brittany White and Jen Grijalva contributing on two of our goals."
The Mids received a pair of first-half goals from sophomore Annie Kendzior (Southlake, Texas) and junior Carissa Youker (Potomac, Md.). Kendzior received a touch-pass from freshman Fallon Puppolo (Sankt Leon, Germany) and finished the 1-v-1 opportunity from eight yards out to put the Mids on the scoreboard at the 24:24 mark.
Nearly nine minutes later, Youker scored on a similar goal set up by a terrific feed from senior Jen Grijalva (Pleasanton, Calif.). It was Youker's team-leading and career-best ninth goal of the season.
The Mids added to their lead in the 56th minute when freshman Brittany Fruin (Reston, Va.) corralled an errant free kick by the Howard goalkeeper and fed senior Brittany White (Carmel, Ind.) for her career-high tying fifth goal of the season.
White, who is in the midst of her best offensive season to date with 16 points (5 g, 6 a), drove down the right side and sent a shot to the near post beating the keeper who was scrambling to get back to the vacated net.
Howard spoiled Navy's bid for its 12th shutout this season as Cynthia Snyder scored of a corner kick in the 78th minute to create the final margin.
The Mids finished the afternoon with a 17-9 advantages in shots, putting seven attempts on target. Three Navy goalkeepers contributed to the victory, with freshman Hannah Legler (Cypress, Texas) making the only two saves of the day, while allowing a goal in the final 45 minutes.
Prior to the start of Sunday's contest, Navy honored its four-member senior class of Grijalva, White, Shelly Moeller (Milford, Ohio) and Beth Reed (Indianapolis, Ind.). Together, this group has helped Navy win more than 77 percent of its games over the last four years, producing a 64-15-10 (.775) overall record.
Navy will face top-seed and tournament host Colgate in next Friday's Patriot League semifinal contest at Van Doren Field in Hamilton, N.Y. The Mids are unbeaten in their last six matches (5-0-1) versus Colgate. The two teams played to a scoreless draw during their regular-season meeting with the Raiders on October 2 in Annapolis.
Match Notes:
*Navy has now won all seven meetings with Howard, outscoring the Bison by a 43-5 margin.
*Moeller extended her consecutive-games started streak to 89 before exiting the contest early in the first half.
