ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy sprint football team recorded its second consecutive shutout and posted its highest point total since 2007 in a 67-0 win over Princeton on Friday night at Rip Miller Field. The Mids outgained the Tigers by a total of 537-27 and are now 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the Collegiate Sprint Football League. Princeton remains winless at 0-6.
"We got a lot of guys a lot of reps tonight, so that was good," said Navy head coach Maj. Mitch Maury, USMC. "It was good to see some of the younger guys get playing time and we've just got to keep getting better now as a team."
Eight different players found the end zone for Navy as it scored its most points since an 83-0 victory over Princeton in Oct. 2007.
Senior receiver JoJo Catrini led the Midshipmen with two touchdown catches. Catrini scored the Mids' first touchdown on the initial drive of the game when he caught a one-yard pass from Tyler Terronez.
After a safety made it 9-0, Catrini picked up his second TD grab of the game when he hauled in a 28-yard strike from David Lorio on the first play of the second quarter.
"We've been working on our passing game and it was good today," said Maury. "All three quarterbacks did a nice job."
Terronez, Lorio and John-Rex Spivey combined to go 14-of-23 for 216 yards and four touchdowns. An efficient Lorio finished 4-of-5 for 112 yards and three scores.
With the score 15-0 still in the second quarter, Lorio recorded TD passes on consecutive drives as he hit Kaleb Kaetterhenry for 26 yards and then Steve Friedrick for 43 yards.
Denzel Reina had a 13-yard scoring run just before the half to make it 36-0.
Navy's ground game controlled the ball in the second half as four different Midshipmen found the end zone. Will Harris (10 yards), D.J. Hooper (23 yards), Marty Meehan (36 yards) and Jordan Foley (46) yards all picked up rushing touchdowns in the third quarter. The scores for Harris, Hooper and Foley were the first of the season for each.
Tyshan Larry led Navy on the ground with 71 yards on team-high 12 carries.
Defensively, the Midshipmen limited the Tigers to 27 total yards, including -33 on the ground, as they posted their second consecutive shutout. The Mids had two interceptions, by Mike Nolan and Cartwright Hall, to boost their league-leading season total to 15.
The Midshipmen also produced a season-high four sacks.
Navy will hit the road to face Cornell next Friday at 7 p.m. as both teams will enter the game at 4-1.
"We've got to work harder now because we have a tough one next week," said Maury.
