CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Virginia won 11 events on the day to post a 156-136 victory over the Navy men's swimming and diving team Friday afternoon at the Aquatic and Fitness Center in Charlottesville, Va. The Cavaliers, who placed 10th at the 2010 NCAA Championship, improved their record to 2-0 on the season with the win while the Mids suffered their first defeat in four meets this fall.
"The team competed very well against a nationally-ranked program," said Navy head coach Bill Roberts. "I'm really pleased with the efforts of the team today."
Navy won four individual events on the day and placed second in five additional events. Mark Meyer (Jr., Bethesda, Md.) won the 200y fly in a time of 1:49.40, Mac Anthony (Jr., Allentown, Pa.) won the 500y free with a clocking of 4:29.22, Hayden Jones (Fr., Spring, Texas) won the one-meter diving event with a score of 364.50, and Olaf Olson (Jr., Bainbridge Island, Wash.), who placed second to Jones on the one meter, accrued 327.15 points to win the three meter.
Anthony was edged for the win in the 200y freestyle event. Matt McLean won the race in a time of 1:36.05 to better Anthony's second-place effort of 1:37.20. Meyer also put together a strong race in the 100y fly. His time of 50.31 placed him second in the field just narrowly behind Peter Geissinger's winning time of 50.06.
Luke Hoffer (Fr., Chapel Hill, N.C.) would finish in second place for the Mids in a pair of events. His time of 57.60 placed him behind Taylor Grey's winning time of 56.37 in the 100y breaststroke, then his 200y breast time of 2:04.48 put him in second place in back of Grey's clocking of 2:00.61.
Additionally, Virginia's Scot Robison edged Robbie Parker (So., Vienna, Va.) for the win in the 50y free by less than three tenths of a second (20.14-20.42).
Friday was the first meet for the Virginia team following the death of its graduate and 11-time All-American swimmer Fran Crippen. Both programs recognized Crippen's memory prior to the start of the meet. The Cavaliers then honored their former teammate by having one of their 400 freestyle relay teams swim just the first three legs of the event.
"It was an honor and privilege for us to compete against Virginia today and be able to pay our respects to Fran," said Roberts. "For members of both teams, honoring his memory today was far more important than the results of the meet were."
Navy will remain on the road next week when the Mids compete against American, Bucknell and Lafayette in a meet to be held Nov. 6 in Lewisburg, Pa.
