Final Stats
FAIRFAX, Va. -- The Navy swimming and diving programs combined for 22 event victories on their way to sweeping respective dual meets against George Mason and Loyola Saturday at the Jim McKay Natatorium in Fairfax, Va. The Navy women's team tallied a 215-83 win over the host Patriots and a 235-65 win over the Greyhounds, while the Navy men's program won a 201-87 decision over George Mason and a 159-133 meet over Loyola.
"It was great way for us to start the year," said Navy women's swimming head coach John Morrison. "It was nice to get into a competitive situation again. We faced two good teams today, so this was a rewarding way for us to begin the season."
"This was a good first meet for us," said Navy men's swimming head coach Bill Roberts. "Overall I was pleased with today. There are a lot of things we need to work on, but for this time of year we are headed in the right direction."
The lone Navy men's athlete to record a pair of wins on the day was Mac Anthony (Jr., Allentown, Pa.), who won the 100 and 200 freestyle events with times of 45.88 and 1:39.97, respectively. He would win the 100 free by nearly one second over teammate Zach Ingold (Fr., Hornell, N.Y.) and the 200 free by 2.7 seconds over Scott Heil from George Mason.
Two different Mids picked up wins in the two backstroke events. Gage Trotter (Fr., Conroe, Texas) won the 100 back in a time of 52.65, with Conor Campbell (Fr., Manassas, Va.) winning the 200 back in a time of 1:54.27. Navy also saw two different Mids tally wins in the butterfly events. A clocking of 1:52.58 allowed Mark Meyer (Jr., Bethesda, Md.) to win the 200 fly, with Steve Dukleth posting a time of 50.74 to win the 100 fly. Completing the list of individual event winners for the Mids was Robbie Parker (So., Vienna, Va.), who won the 50 free in a time of 20.95.
Navy divers Olaf Olson (Sr., Bainbridge Island, Wash.) and Hayden Jones (Fr., Spring, Texas) split the two boards on the day. Jones tallied a score of 332.70 points to edge Olson by seven points, while Olson accrued 374.77 points to top George Mason's Bryan Bahr for the victory by 1.57 points.
The Navy men closed out the meet by placing first (3:10.85) and second (3:11.10) in the 400 freestyle relay.
Both Kellie Darmody (So., Charlotte, N.C.) from Navy and George Mason's Ashley Danner won a trio of individual events during the women's portion of the meet. Darmody won the 100 backstroke (58.16), 50 free (24.37) and 200 back (2:07.30), while Danner claimed wins in the 100 breast (1:03.46), 200 breast (2:18.72) and 200 individual medley (2:08.26) events. What separated the duo was Darmody helping the Mids to a victory in the meet-opening 200 medley relay event.
Navy's Toni Paruso (So., Savannah, Ga.) also recorded multiple individual event victories on the day. She would post a time of 2:06.89 to win the 200 fly before winning the 100 fly with a clocking of 55.87.
Also winning individual events on the day for Navy were Allison Ranzau (Sr., Alpharetta, Ga.) in the 100 free (53.17), Rhenna Vaughn (Fr., Aliso Viejo, Calif.) in the 500 free (5:10.61) and Katie Davidson (So., Geneva, Fla.) in the 1000 free (10:40.04).
Just as took place during the men's meet, two different Navy divers won the two women's diving events Saturday. Courtney Vandament (Jr., Coppell, Texas) won the three meter by nearly 50 points with her score of 243.14, while Jordyn Nicholl (So., Acworth, Ga.) tallied 226.19 points to edge Vandament for the win on the one meter by less than two points.
In addition to winning the 200 medley relay race (1:46.20), Navy also won the 400 freestyle relay event (3:36.19).
The Navy women's team will open the home portion of its schedule Oct. 15 when the Mids play host to James Madison, while the Navy men's team will next be in competition Oct. 22 as part of a men's and women's home meet against UMBC.
