ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy's Laura Gorinski (So., Greensburg, Pa.) and Luke Hoffer (Fr., Chapel Hill, N.C.) were selected as the Counsilman-Hunsaker National Division I Collegiate Swimmers of the Week by CollegeSwimming.com on Tuesday.
Gorinski was a part of four event victories during last week's 240.5-59.5 win by the Navy women's team over Army. She swam the breaststroke leg on Navy's victorious 200 medley relay team (1:44.40) before winning both breaststroke events (1:02.05 and 2:12.09, respectively) and the 200 individual medley races (2:02.84). Each of her three individual event swims set new Army-Navy meet records, as did the relay foursome she was a member of. Additionally, she posted NCAA B cut times in both of the breaststroke events and broke her own school and Patriot League record in the 200 breaststroke.
Hoffer tallied a trio of wins during the 246-54 win by the Navy men's team over the Black Knights. Like Gorinski, he also swam the breaststroke leg on the winning 200 medley relay team (1:29.7) and won both breaststroke races (55.56 and 1:58.87, respectively). All three efforts by Hoffer established new Army-Navy meet records, the relay team's time and his clocking in the 200 breast were NCAA B cut times and he just missed the B cut standard in the 100 breast by five-hundredths of a second.
Gorinski is just the second Navy women's swimmer to be tabbed as the National Swimmer of the Week, while Hoffer's laurel marks the fifth time a member of the Navy men's team has garnered the accolade since the fall of 2006.
