Final Stats
PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Navy men's program stands in first place while the women's team is in sixth place at the end of the second day of competition at the ECAC Open Swimming Championship being held in Pittsburgh this weekend. One day remains in the championship.
The Navy women's team opened the evening by winning the 200 medley relay. The foursome of Sarah Lindberg (So., Phoenix, Ariz.), Laura Gorinski (Fr., Greensburg, Pa.), Toni Paruso (Fr., Savannah, Ga.) and Hollis Capuano (Fr., Wallingford, Conn.) combined to post a time of 1:45.18 to edge second-place Colgate by six-tenths of a second.
After the Navy men's team finished third in its 200 medley relay race and the Navy women did not have a swimmer in either final of the 400 individual medley, Benjamin Bondurant (Fr., Atlanta, Ga.) placed second in the 400 IM. Harvard's Evan Schindewolf won the race with a time of 4:00.91 to edge Bondurant's clocking of 4:01.34.
The next event was the 100 butterfly and it saw Paruso and Natalie Albertson (Jr., St. Paul, Minn.) finish first and second, respectively, in the consolation final of the event, while Robbie Parker (Fr., Vienna, Va.) placed second in the men's championship final. His time of 49.53 allowed him to finish in just back of the winning time of 47.24 set by Jakeoh Lucas of Pitt.
The Navy women's team, which did not send a full squad to the championship, did not have a finalist in the 200 freestyle race. Once the women's races were completed, the Navy men's team would pick up its first event win of the night as William Norton (So., Tyler, Texas) recorded a time of 1:39.29 to win the championship final by three-quarters of a second over Columbia's John Wright.
Gorinski advanced to the championship final of the 100 breaststroke for the Mids, where her time of 1:03.19 was good enough for second place behind the clocking of 1:02.15 posted by American's Dory Isaacs. The top finisher for the Navy men's team in the event was Matthew Harmon (Jr., Cumberland, Md.), who placed fourth with a time of 57.15.
Lindberg would place 12th (58.16) for the Navy women and Ryan Stumpf (Jr., Palm Harbor, Fla.) would finish in third place (51.39) for the Navy men in the next event, the 100 backstroke.
"Ryan had a really good day," said Navy men's swimming head coach Bill Roberts. "He had a strong morning and then dropped even more time to finish third at night. That swim by him and similar efforts made by many others on the team was what made our day for us."
The final event of the night saw the Navy women finish in eighth place (7:49.16) in the 800 freestyle relay, while the Navy men posted a time of 6:44.94 to be edged by event-winner Harvard by one-tenth of a second.
"It was a fabulous relay race," said Roberts of the effort by his foursome of John Ojard (Fr., Ellicott City, Md.), Sean Bagent (Fr., Norcross, Ga.), Drew Mays (So., Southlake, Texas) and Norton in the 800 free relay. "Both teams were stroke-for-stroke over the entire race. I think that is a good preview of what Sunday's competition will bring."
Heading into the final day of competition, the Navy women's team has tallied 194 points while the Navy men has posted 435.5 points. The Navy men hold an 82-point lead over second-place Harvard.
