ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's track & field team (2-0) put forth a strong showing with 17 event victories, eight IC4A qualifying-marks and a number of season-best performances in a tri-meet victory over Patriot League foes American and Colgate on Saturday afternoon at Ingram Field.
The Mids paced the field with 205 points, Colgate took second with 59 points and American rounded out the three-team field with 36 points.
"I thought we came out and competed fairly well today," said Navy head coach Stephen Cooksey. "We put up some good times and several guys produced PRs. We feel good about today's efforts and hopefully now we can build off this next week at Army."
In a competitive 1,500-meter race, junior Andrew Hanko and sophomore Cody Rome both ran career-best and IC4A times to claim the top-two spots. Hanko made a move over the last 500 meters and crossed in first with a 3:48.02 clocking, while Rome took second in 3:49.95.
The Mids' distance runners also made their mark in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, where freshman Dean Black delivered a win and PR of 9:19.33, and the 5,000-meter run, where sophomore Matthew De Villers was the first to finish with an IC4A time of 14:33.32.
Other highlights on the track for the Mids were supplied by sophomore Alex Jackson, who produced a PR of 22.15 seconds in a victory in the 200, and senior Jesse Iwuji and sophomore Isaac Teichgrab, who went 1-2 in a photo finish in the 100-meter dash, each clocking career-best times of 11.14 seconds. Senior P.J. Picache also added a PR in 15.19 seconds in his win in the 110-meter hurdles.
Navy's 4x100-meter relay squad of freshman Travis Fanning, Iwuji, senior Adam Crawford and Jackson took first with a season-best time of 42.60 seconds, just a tenth of a second off an IC4A qualifying time.
Devan Clark delivered first-place performances in both the discus and javelin. In the latter event, Clark and sophomore Chris Ricks went 1-2 and produced IC4A marks of 201'8" (61.48 meters) and 198'5" (60.48 meters), respectively.
Ricks also had a strong second-place showing in the hammer throw behind senior Mark Van Orden, eclipsing 55 meters for the second-straight weekend at 182'8" (55.67 meters). Van Orden won the event with a season-best, IC4A toss of 199'11" (60.94 meters), collecting his third victory of the spring and 10th overall on the year.
Freshman Miles Snelgrove came up with a PR and IC4A mark of his own in the long jump, notching a jump of 23'10 (7.26 meters) in a first-place effort.
Navy heads to West Point next Saturday, April 10 for its annual Star Meet dual with Army. This spring will mark the 84th outdoor dual and 135th all-time meeting between the two service academy rivals.
