ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's soccer team suffered their second-straight loss in double overtime on Friday night. The Mids (2-4-1) dropped a 2-1 decision to Charleston Southern (4-2) on the opening day of the Navy Invitational from Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
Charleston Southern's Caitlin Wesnesky fired in a rebound off an initial save from Navy goalkeeper Hannah Legler in the 107th minute to give the Bucs a 'Golden Goal' victory.
The Bucs were the first team to get on the board earlier in the game, as senior standout Marky Boyce took a long pass and beat the Navy defense to bury her ninth goal of the young season in the 18th minute.
However, Navy responded very quickly, as senior Christine Calderon connected for a goal on a pass from Carissa Youker in the 22nd minute. It was Calderon's third tally of the year and the ninth time in the careers of Calderon and Youker that one has assisted on the other's goal.
It appeared that Boyce would strike again in the 49th minute when she had a clear breakaway towards the Navy net. As Boyce neared the 18-yard box, Legler came off her line and pounced on the ball to stop the scoring opportunity.
Navy had a chance to end the game in the 97th minute, when Carissa Youker made a good run with the ball on the right side and sent a cross into the box to a wide-open Ashlynn Soellner, but Soellner couldn't reach the ball in time.
As the first overtime period was ending, Boyce ripped a shot on goal, but Legler made another save. Legler finished the game with a career-high five saves.
Neither team had a solid chance in the second overtime period until Charleston Southern's Rebecca Holstegge received the ball deep in Navy's zone from Boyce. Holstegge then passed it back to Boyce who fired but Legler made the save but couldn't control the ball. The ball then bounced out in front of the net to Wesnesky, who ended the game.
Amy Arroyo was the winning keeper for the Bucs, logging all 107 minutes and making four saves.
Shots were even in the game at 13-13.
The Mids previously lost to Texas State, 3-2, in double overtime last Sunday.
In the other game of the Navy Invite, Manhattan and Towson played to a 0-0 draw.
Navy will next host Manhattan at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
