Newark, Del. - The Navy women's track and field team (9-0) captured the Delaware Invitational for the third straight year on Friday evening. Navy topped the six-team field with 245 points, outlasting the host Blue Hens who placed second with 177.5 points.
The Midshipmen won six events and were led by Jess Palacio's double in the 1,000-meter run and the mile. The junior won the 1,000 with an ECAC-qualifying time of 2:54.15, narrowly edging out Erin Koch of American by .11 seconds. Koch won the 1,000 at the Patriot League Indoor Championship in 2010. Palacio won the mile with a time of 5:00.97.
Sophomore Liz Milewski placed second in the mile behind Palacio with a time of 5:11.21.
The Mids went 1-2-3 in the 3,000-meter run with Katie Taylor (10:22.46), Mollie Hebda (10:22.80) and Brigid Byrne (10:28.89) sweeping the podium.
Freshman Teronda Brown placed first in the shot put for the second time this season with a distance of 13.01 meters. Senior Janet von Eiff placed second in the event with a throw of 12.41 meters.
Junior Amanda Phelps won the weight throw with a distance of 16.34 meters, her second ECAC-qualifying mark of the season. Navy grabbed the top-four spots in the event as Phelps and was followed by von Eiff (13.45), Maressa Guynn (13.30) and Brown (12.31)
Junior Mansfield Murph won the 500-meter run with a time of 1:18.60. Sophomore Natasha Druggan placed third in the 500 and junior Lauren Carson was fourth. Sophomore Arabia Littlejohn placed fourth in the 400-meter dash (1:01.35) and fifth in the 200-meter dash (26.84).
Junior Christine Scales placed second in the high jump and sophomore Kristin Smith was third. Senior Ashley Bucholz paced Navy in the horizontal jumps, placing fourth in the long jump and third in the triple jump.
Junior Ashley Aitken finished second in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.29.
The Mids will next compete in the Navy Invitational on January 15.
