ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's swimming and diving team improved to 8-1 on the season as it defeated Maryland, 162-124, with a strong effort on Saturday afternoon at Lejeune Hall. The win was Navy's third consecutive over the Terps, who are now 1-5 in dual meets this season.
"I was really pleased with our team and our effort from beginning to end," said Navy head coach Bill Roberts. "We've been in some heavy training the past couple of weeks, so today it was good just coming to the pool to race and get back to competition."
The Mids set the tone for the day in the first event as their top 400-meter medley relay team of Mac Anthony, Luke Hoffer, Steve Dukleth and Aaron Aiken took first place with a time of 3:47.26.
In the next event, Navy's Erik Hunter (8:14.84), Justin Vagts (8:25.78) and Sam Martinette (8:27.39) dominated the 800-meter freestyle by sweeping the top-three spots.
Anthony (1:52.36), William Norton (1:52.84) and Hugh Davison (1:53.46) followed suit in the next event as they took the top-three places in the 200-meter freestyle.
After Joseph Stark won the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 57.76, Hoffer followed with his first of two victories on the afternoon.
Hoffer turned in his fastest time of the year in the 100-meter breaststroke with a 1:04.52, which tied Ari Molina for the seventh-fastest time in academy history. He also swam a personal best in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:18.92, which is the 10th-fastest time in Navy history.
Aiken also claimed two first-place finishes on the day as he led Navy to a sweep of the top-three spots in both the 50 and 100 freestyle events with times of 23.45 and 51.59, respectively.
Mark Meyer posted the seventh-fastest time in USNA history in the 100-meter butterfly as he clocked a 56.04. He also won the 200-meter butterfly with a time of 2:02.03.
"We had several multiple-event winners today and I'd like to recognize all those guys for stepping up," said Roberts. "We're looking forward to the new semester."
Navy's divers were equally as strong on Saturday as Hayden Jones (360.55), Olaf Olson (341.35) and Wil Mayo (296.70) picked up the top-three places in the one-meter competition.
Olson later posted the highest score of the day in the three-meter event with a 394.90.
