Navy Garners Two Weekly Nods from Patriot League

Oct. 10, 2011

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- Laura Gorinski (Jr., Greensburg, Pa.) and Ben Freedman (So., Kennewick, Wash.) received recognition from the Patriot League Monday for their efforts during Navy's opening meets of the 2011-12 swimming and diving season. Gorinski was tabbed as the league's women's swimmer of the week, while Freedman was named as the top men's diver in the league for this past week.

Gorinski won a trio of events to help the Mids post a 209-89 win over Loyola this past Saturday in Baltimore. She won the 200 individual medley race and both breaststroke events against the Greyhounds. Gorinski posted two-second victories in both of the breaststroke events before winning the 200 IM by a little more than three seconds.

Meanwhile, Freedman tallied three victories and a second-place showing during Navy's victories over Loyola (157-126) and George Mason (162-124). He was the overall winner on the three-meter springboard and placed second on the one meter. Freedman won the three meter by just 1.65 points and finished 59 points in back of the overall one-meter winner. His latter score gave him a 10-point win in the team dual against Loyola.

This is Gorinski's seventh weekly nod from the Patriot League, while Freedman's award is the first such laurel in his career.

The Navy women's team will continue its season Friday when the Mids race at James Madison. Meanwhile, the Navy men's team is off from competition until facing UMBC on October 21.
