ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Justin Vagts (So., Crofton, Md.) and Mark Meyer (Jr., Bethesda, Md.) headlined the list of Navy swimmers who were named to one of the CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major All-America teams that were announced this week. Vagts and Meyer earned first-team accolades from the organization, while 15 Mids garnered honorable mention recognition.
First-team honors were bestowed upon swimmers from mid-major programs who competed at the NCAA Championship. Vagts placed 25th in the 1650 freestyle event and Meyer placed 29th in the 200 butterfly competition at this year's national event.
Navy was the lone school to place multiple swimmers on the men's eight-member first team.
A swimmer earned honorable mention recognition for having posted an NCAA `B' cut qualifying time that did not advance them to compete at the national championship. Navy women's swimmers receiving honorable mention status were Laura Gorinski (So., Greensburg, Pa.), Toni Paruso (So., Savannah, Ga.) and Rheanna Vaughn (Fr., Aliso Viejo, Calif.). On the men's side, Aaron Aiken (Sr., Ocala, Fla.), Mac Anthony (Jr., Allentown, Pa.), Ben Bondurant (So., Atlanta, Ga.), Jesse Cohen (Sr., Mountain Lakes, N.J.), Hugh Davison (Fr., Towson, Md.), Pete Donahue (Sr., Washington, D.C.), Steve Dukleth (Jr., Glen Ellyn, Ill.), Luke Hoffer (Fr., Chapel Hill, N.C.), Erik Hunter (Sr., Placerville, Calif.), Zach Ingold (Fr., Hornell, N.Y.), Sam Martinette (Sr., Richmond, Va.) and William Norton (Jr., Tyler, Texas) all earned honorable mention recognition.
Mid-major schools are those programs that compete in the America East, Atlantic 10, Colonial Athletic Association, Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association, Horizon, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mountain Pacific, Missouri Valley, Patriot, Sun Belt, Summit and Western Athletic conferences. Institutions are also eligible by awarding fewer than half of the maximum-allowable scholarships (seven for women, five for men).
