The Navy Sailing Team came out strong in its first big team racing weekend of the year, taking the victory at the Tom Noble Team Race hosted by Washington College.
This two-conference regatta offered strong competition and challenging conditions that kept the Midshipmen on their toes throughout the weekend. Saturday saw extremely windy conditions and only a handful of races were able to be completed. In the windiest race of the day, Navy won an unusual race against BU, where two of Navy's boats capsized and the third swamped a few times, but the Mids were still able to win with a 2, 3, 4 combination by virtue of being able to right our capsized boats more quickly than our opponents. Sunday was a very different story, when light and very shifty winds combined with shallow water to force the cancellation of a number of races. In the end, one round robin was completed and Navy claimed the overall win with a 6-1 record in the eight-team regatta. Sailing for the Midshipmen were skippers Lukas Edegran, Taylor Vann, Markus Edegran and Alex Ramos, with crews Saverio Maldari, Jocelynn Knudsen and Alex Asuncion.
The weekend's biggest team race regatta was the Bob Bavier Team Race, hosted by the College of Charleston. The Midshipmen who made the long journey to South Carolina were rewarded with near-perfect sailing conditions and three complete round robins against some of the best squads in the country. After a good start and a very strong second round, Navy was in position to challenge for the lead before some mistakes and bad breaks hit during round three. Navy ended up fifth overall out of 10 teams with a 16-11 record for the weekend. The skippers for this regatta were Jason Carminati, Devin Laviano and Michael Grove, and the crews were Caroline Lockett, Julie Digiovanni, Glenn McKenna, Chelsea Smith and Charlie Peck.
The remainder of the team competed in the Quad Scrimmage hosted at Old Dominion University. In Norfolk, Saturday proved too windy to sail at all, so the team had to wait until Sunday to see any action. Light winds on the second day forced a cancellation after only three races. Even though this was not an official event, Navy's Mary Hall and Layne Morrison were the top performers in the 18-boat fleet and Connor Timmins and Connor Hendi came in fourth. Also sailing for Navy were Erica Leinmiller, George Prieto, Killian Corbishley, Marissa Lihan, Sarah Blake, Emma Farris, Julie Miller and Philip Youngberg.
