BALTIMORE, Md. - A strong defensive performance helped the Navy women's soccer team (10-3-5, 5-1-2 PL) finish in a 0-0 tie with Loyola (6-8-3, 2-3-3 PL) on Sunday at Ridley Athletic Complex. Navy moves to 5-1-2 in league play, dropping to second place behind Colgate (6-1-1) while Loyola goes to 2-3-3.
"We did not play with a sense of urgency today," Navy head coach Carin Gabarra said. "Our play for the first 60 minutes was not on par with how we have played all season."
Navy held Loyola in check for the entire 110 minutes of play, limiting the Greyhounds to three shots (one on net) and seven corner kicks. Navy goalkeeper Dayton Wetherby (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) recorded her fifth shutout of the season, tallying one save.
Navy had advantages over Loyola in shots, 11-3, shots on net, 3-1 and corner kicks, 8-7. Senior forward Morgan Dankanich (Glenmoore, Pa.) led the Mids with four shots, one of which was on net.
Navy's closest scoring opportunity to break the scoreless tie came in the 106th minute. The Mids were attacking inside Loyola's defensive third and senior midfielder Rachel Hunter (Raleigh, N.C.) gained possession inside the 18 to lob a pass to an open Dankanich on the near post. Dankanich settled the pass and curled a shot to the far post, but missed the net by inches.
Following the scoreless tie, Navy extended its unbeaten streak to nine matches. The Mids have not allowed a goal in league play in the last 270 minutes.
Navy will wrap up the regular season with archrival Army on Friday at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility in Annapolis, Maryland. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m. and can be seen live and for free on PatriotLeague.TV.
