Oct. 28, 2014 ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Collegiate Sprint Football League has selected Navy running back Eric Wellmon (Jr., Wallkill, N.Y.) as its offensive player of the week in Tuesday's weekly award announcements.
The junior running back continued his dominance of the CSFL with a career-day at Franklin Pierce on Saturday. Wellmon rushed 30 times for three touchdowns and a personal-best 227 yards. He also scored a two-point conversion to personally account for 20 of Navy's 45 points in its victory over Franklin Pierce.
Wellmon has now recorded five of the CSFL's top six rushing performances this season with over 180 yards in each of his last five games. With 1,138 total rushing yards on the year, he is 15 yards shy of breaking Navy's record for most rushing yards in a single season. He previously shattered the program's record for most touchdowns in a season during week five at Cornell.
This is the second CSFL weekly honor for Wellmon this year as he was recognized on Sept. 30 for his efforts versus Mansfield.
As a program this is the fourth weekly award that a Mid has won in 2014. Aside from Wellmon's two accolades, Brady Flies (Sr., Seattle, Wash.) was selected at the league's defensive player of the week on Oct. 7 following Navy's win over Penn and Corey Garcia (Jr., San Diego, Calif.) was chosen on Oct. 21 after a career-day against Cornell.
The Mids (6-0) will close out its 2014 season with the CSFL title and annual star on the line in a Friday matchup against their rivals, the Army Black Knights (6-0). Kickoff between the two foes is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
