Last Time Out
The Navy sprint football team opened its 2014 season with a dominant 63-0 victory over Princeton at home on Friday, Sept. 19. In a complete team effort, the Mids had six different players record touchdowns in a contest that was shortened to 30 minutes. Navy's defense shined, as well, as it held Princeton to -28 total yards for the lowest offensive output against a Midshipmen defense in the program's 69-year history.
Individually, running back Eric Wellmon and quarterback Joe Hampton led the way for Navy as they each recorded three touchdowns. Wellmon netted his three scores in conjunction with his team-high eight carries for 87 yards, and Hampton finished the evening completing all four of his pass attempts for 84 yards.
Defensively, Billy Eisenhauer and Marquis White led a staunch effort that saw seven different players record either a sack, interception or fumble recovery. Eisenhauer recorded six tackles and a sack, while White had five stops with one quarterback sack.
The Mountaineers (0-1 CSFL)
In its sixth year of play in the CSFL, Mansfield is looking to make strides after a trying 1-6 campaign in 2013. The team's improvement was seen immediately last Saturday before over 4000 fans in a home matchup with Penn. The Mountaineers battled the Quakers for 60 minutes and led for over 58 of those minutes before falling late to a Penn touchdown with 1:42 remaining in the fourth quarter. Mansfield's 13-0 lead through three quarters went for naught, as Penn was victorious by a final score of 14-13.
Statistically, Mansfield was outgained by Penn, 313 to 300, though it won the time of possession battle, 31:17 to 28:43 and converted over 50 percent (9-17) of its third downs. The Mountaineers passed for 243 yards, while rushing for 57 net yards.

Quoting the Coach
Coach Lake on this week's matchup with Mansfield ...
"We expect Mansfield to be aggressive. We know they'll have some major hometown support with probably 4000-plus people. Dealing with big crowds and pressure, is an area that we'll have to learn to get better with."
"They're a good team, whose front four are very aggressive, they've got solid running backs and they throw the ball. Their quarterback is also very quick so the defense will have to press them hard on every front and try not to give anything up. Defensively, they're pretty solid. I expect them to bring everything they have."
"Three years ago, they went in with a halftime lead over us and we saw that again when they led early against Penn, so they definitely like to start fast. We'll have to come out ready to play four quarters of football."
