Oct. 12, 2015 ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy sophomore Gary Prieto was off to a hot start to the season in singlehanded sailing, finishing top three in his first two events of the season. When it mattered most this past weekend at the MAISA Men's Singlehanded Championship for the Carl Van Duyne Trophy in Kings Point, N.Y., Prieto came through again, finishing second overall and punching his ticket to the National Championship November 6-8 in Norfolk, Va.
The top 18 men in Navy's conference was on hand and the conditions were tricky, making it tough to be consistent for the event. Addison Hackstaff was also in attendance and made came on strong in the end, only to fall short of qualifying in sixth place.
Also in New York, but on the other side of the state, Navy competed in the David Lee Arnoff Trophy at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Light winds prevented much racing from happening on Saturday, but the 17-team field enjoyed a full day on Sunday. Navy wound up fifth overall with Michael Madigan and Ana Mier finishing second in A division while Jimmy Madigan and Mary Morocco were seventh in B.
Navy's other away event of the weekend was at Georgetown University, the Tom Curtis Memorial Regatta. Navy finished third overall out of nine teams with Peter Hogan and Manuel Inserni-Pagan finishing fifth and Tyler Fleig and Willard Hawley coming in sixth in the combined divisions.
At home, Navy hosted a tough fleet of 15 women's teams at the Navy Fall Women's Regatta. The home team started off rough, but improved throughout the event, winding up 12th overall. Hannah Hughes, Molly Hanson and Michelle Katz finished fifth in A Division, Molly Robertson and Brittany Webb-Martin were 14th in B and Megan Hough was 14th in C.
