Nov. 14, 2015 MEMPHIS, Tenn. - In a matchup of the two 12th-ranked teams in this week's Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association poll, Navy and Memphis faced off on Saturday in a competitive GARC conference matchup. After 60 shots in smallbore and another 60 in air rifle, the Mids came up short, 4,663-4,634. Jodi Cull-Host (Sr., Los Alamos, N.M.) highlighted Navy's performance with a career-high 593 in air rifle.
A slow start in the first half of the match dug Navy a hole that they would be unable to overcome in the air rifle portion of the event even as the team posted its second-highest air rifle score of the season at 2,346.
Dan Jonas (Jr., Allentown, N.J.) and Cull-Host provided Navy with a strong one-two punch in terms of aggregate scoring. Jonas finished second overall with 1,165 points, while Cull-Host was fourth at 1,164. Memphis' Haylea Broughton was the top finisher at 1,168.
"We had some good performances today," remarked head coach Bill Kelley. "I'm really proud of Jodi's effort in air rifle; a 593 is a really great result. It was pretty decent match between two competitive teams. We were close in slings during smallbore, but faded a bit. In air rifle, a 2,346 is a really solid score; our second-best of the year. At the end of the day, having Memphis put up 4,663 points is a tough hill to climb."
Smallbore action opened the day for the Mids on Saturday and the team posted a four-scorer result of 2,288. Jonas was the top finishing Navy shooter as he bested his season average of 576.8 with a 577 score versus Memphis. A turning point in the match was the Tigers ability to place all five of its starters in the top-six overall standings for smallbore. Zach Gibson (Sr., Montrose, Colo.) and Cull-Host were tightly packed in seventh and eighth with scores of 572 and 571, respectively. Josh Watson (Fr., Enterprise, Ala.) was the fourth scorer for the Mids with a 568.
Down 21 points, the Mids came out in air rifle and posted a 2,346-point effort. Cull-Host led Navy's counting squad with a career-high 593 score. Jonas was one point off his personal best with 588 points. Watson and Gibson rounded out the Mids' counting score with efforts by 583 and 582, respectively. Thomas Sarant (So., Massapequa, N.Y.) was Navy's fifth starter and he recorded a 580-point result.
Memphis' total aggregate score was the highest mark by a Navy opponent this season.
The Mids will conclude the fall portion of its schedule with another GARC matchup next Saturday. Beginning at 9 a.m. on Nov. 21, Navy and Kentucky will face off in Lexington, Ky.
