Feb. 23, 2015 ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Even though ice is blocking Navy's boats in at home, the Navy intercollegiate sailing team began its spring competition season with two events down south.
In the weekend's big interconference regatta, a young group of Midshipmen made the long trip town to South Carolina for Charleston Spring Regatta. A fleet of 18 teams came from all over to enjoy the relatively warm weather and quality sailing that Charleston offers.
While the air was much warmer than home, light winds for much of the weekend meant that only ten races could be completed per division and there were numerous delays. The Midshipmen stayed in the hunt on Saturday, before turning it on Sunday morning. The team opened up a big lead and despite a few late slip ups, Navy held on to take its first regatta victory of 2015. Addison Hackstaff and Megan Hough finished fourth in A division while Gary Prieto and Brittany Webb-Martin took the low point victory in B. Will Hawley was also on hand, ready to go, but the conditions never allowed him his time to shine.
A little further north, another group of Mids traveled to Norfolk, Va. to participate in the ODU Quad scrimmage. Ice on the river and terrible weather prevented any sailing on Saturday, but the teams were able to get out on Sunday for some much needed practice. Mary Hall, Alex Asuncion, Emma Ferris, Connor Hendi, Michael Popp, Aaron Hull and Patrick Snow don't have any official results to show from this scrimmage, but they did gain some valuable experience sailing against quality teams and they left with a better knowledge of what to work on once the team thaws out in Annapolis.
