ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Army shot 50 percent from the floor after halftime and turned Navy's nine second-half turnovers into 18 points to pull away from and defeat the Mids, 58-46, Saturday afternoon at Alumni Hall in Annapolis in the annual Star Game between the women's basketball programs.

Navy (13-10, 7-5 Patriot League) held early leads of 10-5 and 16-11 over Army (17-5, 9-3), but the Mids scored just one point in the next nine minutes to fall behind, 23-17. The Mids chipped away at the deficit over the final three minutes of the stanza and went into the halftime break down just 25-24.

"We talked about wanting to come out and be good," said Navy head coach Stefanie Pemper. "And I thought we were. Going into the first and second media timeouts we had some kids make some great plays and great baskets."

The lead changed hands a couple of times early in the second half. The Black Knights held a 36-35 advantage before going on a 12-3 run to jump in front, 48-38, with just eight minutes left to play. The teams traded a few baskets to make the score 51-43 with just six minutes showing on the clock, but the Mids could not answer an ensuing 7-0 Army run.

"We were so prepared for everything they (Army) do," said Pemper, "they just executed really well. They hit shots in the second half."

Army made 13 of 26 shots from the floor in the second half, including 3 of 4 three-point attempts. Navy also shot the ball well after halftime, connecting on 44.4% of its attempts, but the Mids took just 18 second-half shots (making 8). Overall, Army held a 44.2%-37.8% advantage in field goal percentage for the game.

"For us to take only 18 second-half shots ... that's where the turnovers hurt us," said Pemper. "We shot better in the second half, which is awesome for us. But just not enough (shots)."

Carrying the Navy offense was its outside shooting as the Mids were 8 of 11 from three-point range on the afternoon (Army was 5 of 14). But the Mids were hurt by turnovers, especially in the second half. While Navy committed those nine second-half turnovers, it could only force the Black Knights into three turnovers after halftime and seven for the game (Navy had 13 in all). In addition to its 20-4 edge in points scored after turnovers, Army also had a 24-14 advantage in points scored in the paint.

Justice Swett (So., Nashville, Tenn.) was 3 of 3 from three-point range in scoring a Navy-high and career-best 13 points in the game. Joining her in double figures were Sarita Condie (So., Lovelock, Nev.) with 10 points and Marina Muenster (Fr., Coppell, Texas) with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Army's Kelsey Minato was 8 of 16 from the floor -- 3 of 6 from three-point range -- and made 4 of 5 free throw attempts to score 23 points, while teammate Olivia Schretzman was 7 of 10 from the field and made both of her foul shots to tally 16 points.

"Number five (Minato) had a really good game and was the difference," said Pemper. "Also 12 (Schretzman) had a really good strong game."

Navy will take to the road for its next game as it plays Wednesday night at Bucknell.
