Lightweight Rowing Wins Three of Five Races against Harvard

April 18, 2015

BOSTON -- The Navy lightweight rowing had a strong morning of racing on Saturday versus Harvard. Taking on the fifth-ranked squad in the nation, the 10th-ranked Mids showed strongly and earned wins in three of five races on the Charles River.

Navy's day of racing in Boston began with three consecutive victories. The Mids in the second freshmen eight were the first in the water and the first to win as they defeated two of the Crimson boats with a time of 6:27. Harvard's second freshmen crew finished at 6:49, while the Crimson's fifth varsity crew clocked in at 6:57.

In fourth varsity action, Navy earned another decisive victory as the Mids timed in seven seconds clear of the Crimson at 6:29 to 6:36.

The Mids' final win on Saturday came in the third varsity eight race with a six-second win at 6:13 to 6:19.

After Harvard secured its first win in the second varsity at 6:08 to 6:18, the Crimson won the first varsity race and kept control of the Haines Cup. Navy challenged throughout the first varsity competition and lead at the 1,000-meter mark, but Harvard closed the gap and eventually took the lead to win by five seconds at 6:03 to 6:08.

"It was hard fought racing throughout the entire morning today and I'm proud of our effort in Boston," said head coach Shawn Bagnall. "Testing ourselves this weekend against a strong Harvard team, who continues to pick up speed each week, was a good benchmark for our prep toward Eastern Sprints. I thought we were able to continue to season some line-ups and find out what needs improvement this coming week. As is more apparent each week, there are no "easy outs" in our league, and this coming Saturday against Penn is no exception. We're looking forward to getting back to work on Monday for our final home race of the year."

Navy will wrap up its regular season with a home meet next Saturday versus Penn at 7:30 a.m. The Mids and Quakers will be racing on the Severn River in a joint meet with the heavyweight program.
