ANNAPOLIS, Md. - It was the first competition weekend of the year for the Navy intercollegiate sailing team with two home regattas and one away event. The team also supported the fall Wounded Warrior Regatta in Annapolis on Saturday.

Navy's two home events were run together, the Laser South Regatta for men and the Radial Open for women. These two events serve as qualifiers for Navy's conference singlehanded championships.

Despite a lot of stormy weather on Saturday, both events provided some spectacular racing, with challenging conditions and tight fleets. In the 20-boat men's fleet, Navy's Gary Prieto and Addison Hackstaff finished third and fourth, respectively, to advance on to the Carl Van Duyne MAISA Men's Singlehanded Championship in Kings Point from Oct. 10-11. Michael Madigan finished 11th and Peter Hogan was 14th.

In the 18-boat women's Radial Open, Hannah Hughes finished fifth and advanced to the Faye Bennet MAISA Women's Singlehanded Championship at Navy on Sept. 26-27. Megan Hough also competed in the women's division, but was forced to retire from the event due to injury and finished 18th.

Navy's other event of the weekend was the Riley Cup at Old Dominion University. Navy finished ninth out of 18 teams, with Jimmy Madigan and Katie Wesdyk coming in eighth in A division while Tyler Fleig and Michelle Katz were 10th in B.
