ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy sprint football team continues the second half of its 2016 schedule with a Friday night matchup versus the Mansfield University Mountaineers at home. The Mids (4-1) and Mountaineers (0-4) will meet for the eighth time in Mansfield's short sprint football history and Navy will look to uphold its unblemished record in the all-time series. Kickoff between the two teams is set for 7 p.m. at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
The Mids will also be looking to stay in contention for the CSFL championship as they sit just a game back of the Penn Quakers in the league standings. Through five weeks of play, Penn leads the league with a 4-0 record, while Navy (4-1) and Army (4-1) lurk nearby. After a bye week, the Mids and Black Knights will conclude the 2016 CSFL season on Friday, Nov. 4 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
Last Time Out
Navy breezed to a 43-0 shutout over visiting Chestnut Hill last Friday night at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Navy scored touchdowns on its first three possessions and posted its second shutout of the season. At halftime, the Mids were up 36-0.
Navy rolled up a season-best 471 yards of total offense and senior running back Brendon Clements led the way with a season-high 149 rushing yards and three touchdowns. For that effort, Clements was selected as the CSFL Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday.
Navy held Chestnut Hill to 214 total yards and just 36 yards on the ground. The Griffins made two trips to the red zone, but Drew Dziwulski blocked a 25-yard field goal attempt in the first quarter and the Mids forced a turnover on downs on its own 5-yard line late in the fourth quarter to preserve the shutout.
Offensively, QB Nick Deterding completed 12-of-16 passes for 189 yards and the two scores, while backup Jon Saadey was 8-of-12 for 67 yards. WR Matt Vogel caught nine passes for 96 yards to lead the Mids.
On the other side of the ball, DE Bryant Schlade recorded two sacks, a forced fumble and a team-high six tackles, while his backup Gavin O'Donnell had five tackles and a sack in second half action. LB Alex Oldham recorded Navy's other caused turnover as he intercepted a Chestnut Hill pass on the Griffins' first offensive drive. Oldham added five total tackles, three of which were for a loss.
With the 43-0 victory, Navy has now outscored its opponents 93-0 at home in 2016.
The Mountaineers (0-4)
Under the leadership of first-year head coach and former Navy sprint assistant coach Rick Novak, the Moutaineers are off to an 0-4 start in 2016. Novak coached the Midshipmen offensive line and special teams from 2013 through 2015, as well as served on staff from 1994 to 1999. In total, Novak and the Mids collected five CSFL titles during his time with the program.
This season, Mansfield has struggled to find its footing offensively as the team has yet to score more than two touchdowns in a game so far. Last Saturday at home, the Mounties had their strongest showing to date with a 19-13 setback versus the Franklin Pierce Ravens. After falling behind 13-0 early in the first quarter, the host team scored once before halftime to cut it to a 13-7 deficit. The teams traded touchdowns in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter to send the game final at 19-13.
Franklin Pierce outgained Mansfield, 267 to 165 with a 232 to 43 advantage rushing. The Mountaineers threw for 122 yards on 12 of 23 attempts by quarterback Adam Hutchison. D.J. Mclean was Hutchison's favorite target against the Ravens with 56 receiving yards and a touchdown on four catches. On defense, LB John Capwell made a game-high 14 tackles and tallied one of his team's two interceptions.
