Oct. 3, 2016 ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy intercollegiate sailing team competed in three regattas this weekend and recorded solid finishes at all three, including a first-place finish at the Intrepid Trophy.
Navy hosted the Intrepid Trophy Match Race in the program's new fleet of matched Navy 26 sailboats. Light winds and heavy rain made for an interesting weekend and the competition was stiff between the seven schools in attendance. Navy's team of Michael Madigan, Jimmy Madigan, Nicholas Gartner and Emma Remis showed exceptional upwind speed and solid starting tactics. They rode those skills to 4.5 points for the event, tied for first with Georgetown. Due to Navy's head-to-head win, the Midshipmen were declared the winner and the Academy's name will be engraved on the Intrepid Trophy.
Coast Guard hosted the Danmark Trophy this weekend, where 20 top teams from around the country squared off in the weekend's premier event. Shifty winds, strong currents and a very competitive fleet made this event extremely difficult. Navy fought hard throughout the regatta to come in fifth overall. Patrick Snow and Mary Morocco came in sixth in A division while Gary Prieto, Molly Hanson and Ana Mier were fifth in B. Molly Robertson was also on hand.
At the Kings Point Dinghy Open, Navy fielded two of the 19 teams in attendance, finishing third and ninth overall. Max Brill and Kent Mathes came in third in A division while Tyler Fleig and Bo An were 11th. Hamrick Morgan and Joshua Walton finished fourth in B Division while Peter Hogan and Karma Richards were fifth.
