Men Win, Women Second at ECAC Swim Meet

Feb. 28, 2016

Final Stats

ANNAPOLIS, Md. â€"â€" The Navy men's swimming and diving team closed the ECAC Championship with a meet-high 688 points to earn the program's third title in a row Sunday at Lejeune Hall in Annapolis. Additionally, Navy's women's team accrued 413.5 points to place second to Virginia's winning total of 751.5 points.

This weekend's results came one week after Navy swept the Patriot League team titles for the fifth-straight season.

"We were very impressed with how these guys came out at session one on the very first day of the meet," said Navy men's swimming head coach Bill Roberts, who was selected as the ECAC Men's Swimming Coach of the Year. "They just raced and competed. We knew we were going to have a good meet at that early point. Everyone was either at or way ahead of their best times and there was good spirit and energy on the sidelines. I couldn't be happier with the result."

Pacing the efforts for the Navy men was ECAC Swimmer of the Year Eric Collins (Jr., North Augusta, S.C.), who won both breaststroke events. Luke Nelson (Fr., Providence, R.I.), who on Thursday recorded an Olympic Trials qualifying time in the 400 freestyle, also won a pair of individual events during the three-day meet to help the Mids outdistance second-place Army West Point by 218 points. Nelson posted victories in the 500 free and the 1650 freestyle events. Notching the team's fifth and final event crown was Ethan King (Jr., Collierville, Tenn.), who won the 100 backstroke final.

King also reached two additional championship finals, placing fifth in the 100 free and seventh in the 50 free. Four other Mids joined King in qualifying for a trio of championship finals. Chipper Machemehl (Fr., Peachtree, Ga.) finished in second place in the 100 backstroke, fourth place in the 200 individual medley and eighth place in the 100 butterfly. Sam Ciocco (Jr., Walkersville, Md.) placed second in the 1650 free, third in the 400 individual medley and fifth in the 500 free. Shane Condon (Jr., Mechanicsville, Va.) took sixth in the 1650 free and eighth in the 200 backstroke and 500 freestyle. Vince Everman (Fr., Philadelphia, Pa.) claimed third in the 200 backstroke and 200 individual medley and fourth in the 100 backstroke.

Additionally, Jack Eudy (Fr., Charlotte, N.C.) placed second in the 200 fly and third in the 100 fly.

"Luke was real solid this weekend," said Roberts. "He had real significant time drops. Tack on the Trials cut time and he had a great weekend. Sam was consistently good. He finished off a great meet with a great mile. Eric was just awesome. His IM was great and he dropped a lot of time in all three events. He just raced."

On the women's side, Navy took the team silver medal for the second year in a row and the third time in the last five seasons. Included in this recent span was a victory by the Mids in 2012. Navy's point total this year allowed them to finish 23.5 points ahead of third place Army West Point.

"It was an outstanding weekend," said Navy women's head coach John Morrison. "It was great to have two great meets in Lejeune Hall to finish out our team competitions this season. This team fought real hard from day one to put it to a lot of great teams. This was the fastest ECAC Meet we have competed in. That was a lot of fun to see and be part of. Our team responded well to those challenges."

Individually, Erin Jordan (Fr., Schnecksville, Pa.) finished in second place in the 1650 free, fifth in the 500 free and eighth in the 200 backstroke, while Zoe Macfarlane (Sr., Pensacola, Fla.) took third in the 200 back, seventh in the 200 IM and eighth in the 100 back.

Reaching a pair of championship finals were Olivia Morrell (Jr., Albuquerque, N.M.) and Kristine Doan (Sr., San Ramon, Calif.). Morrell placed fourth in the 50 free and sixth in the 100 free, while Doan took sixth place in the 200 breast and seventh in the 100 breast.

The Mids also had seven swimmers reach championship finals in one event.

"It really speaks to the whole team as a group," said Morrison, "both the Patriot League group and the ECAC group to train each other to success. They trained extremely hard this year and were very consistent. That showed in both meets. To see what this ECAC team did was fantastic to be part of and watch best time after best time. Everyone stepped up for each other. That's one of the big things we have promoted the last few years and being team first, and that was the case here."
