April 18, 2016 ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy intercollegiate sailing team placed third out of 19 teams at the Navy Spring Regatta and sixth out of 16 teams at the Owen Trophy this past weekend.
The program hosted the Navy Spring Regatta, which is one of the biggest regattas of the college sailing spring season, which consisted of 19 teams from all over the country.
While the weather was beautiful all weekend, light winds made the racing very challenging for sailors and race organizers. The field was able to get in a good event, though with 12 races per division. Aaron Hull, Manuel Inserni-Pagan, and Hamrick Morgan helped with Race Committee and did a fantastic job running fair and square races all weekend.
On the course, Navy fought through the challenging conditions and talented fleet to remain near the top of the leader board throughout. In the end though, Navy came in just behind Georgetown and Charleston to finish third overall. Michael Popp and Brittany Webb-Martin finished seventh in A division while Gary Prieto and Michelle Katz sailed a great event in B, claiming the divisional victory by 24 points.
Navy's one away event of the weekend was the Owen, Mosbacher and Knapp Trophy Regatta, hosted this year by Cornell. The weather in Ithaca may have been even nicer than it was in Annapolis and the competitors enjoyed a beautiful weekend on the water for this annual event that draws from the Ivy League, service academies and the founding schools of college sailing.
Navy finished sixth overall in the 16-team event. Tyler Fleig and Ana Mier came in 10th in A division whileHannah Hughes, Will Hawley and Mary Morocco were sixth in B.
