ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy head women's soccer coach Carin Gabarra has announced that Joe Mallia will join the Mids staff as an assistant coach. Mallia comes to Navy with over 20-plus years of Division I women's soccer coaching experience.

"We are excited to add Joe to our staff," Navy head coach Carin Gabarra said. "He has exceptional credentials and vast experience of coaching at the Division I level. His ability to step in and help us reach our lofty goals, along with the priority of creating meaningful relationships with the staff, players, and alumni, will make an easy transition. He understands the mission of the United States Naval Academy, and his personal goals align with the goals and success of the program."

"I would like to thank Carin Gabarra, Chet Gladchuk, Steve O'Brien and Rob Blanck with this tremendous opportunity," Mallia said. "I've been very fortunate to this point in my coaching career to work at some special universities and institutions. Having said that, I am looking forward with great anticipation to working amongst our nations finest young men and women at the Naval Academy. Their level of commitment and self-expectation on and off the playing field is second to none. I am excited to get to work in assisting Carin and Rob as they continue to compete for Patriot League championships and beyond."

Mallia has an extensive background coaching Division I women's soccer players, accruing 12 years as a head coach and 10 years as an assistant coach.

Mallia most recently comes to Navy after a four-year stint at the University of Tennessee as an assistant coach. With his main focus on the Volunteer defense, he helped guide UT to one of the top defenses in the Southeastern Conference with a goals-against average of 0.96 over four seasons.

Before Tennessee, Mallia led Loyola Marymount University for five seasons as the head coach. Under his tutelage, the Lions tallied a 50-34-11 overall record in five years, including four double-digit win seasons.

Mallia gained great experience at UCLA as he coached the Bruins for two seasons as an assistant. He helped guide UCLA to a 43-6-2 record and back-to-back NCAA College Cup Semifinal bids (2005-06), which included an appearance in the 2005 NCAA College Cup Final. Mallia was also involved in recruiting U.S Women's National team member Lauren Cheney Holiday.

Mallia began his Division I coaching experience at Loyola University (Md.). He coached four seasons (1994-1997) with the Greyhounds as an assistant coach, tallying a 47-27-7 record. Mallia then was promoted as Loyola's head coach for the beginning of the 1998 season and guided the Greyhounds to one of their best stretches in program history. He led Loyola to five consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament titles (2000-04) and accrued a record of 87-45-9 over seven years.

As a player, Mallia started for Old Dominion University from 1987 to 1991. He led the Monarch's to a 33-15-13 record and the program's first ever NCAA College Cup appearance in 1989. Mallia was named to Old Dominion's Hall of Fame in 1998.

Mallia graduated Old Dominion with a bachelor's degree in sports medicine.

Mallia holds a U.S. Soccer National `B' License and Advanced National Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
