May 31, 2016 SAN DIEGO - Navy placed 10th out of 16 teams at the ICSA LaserPerformance Team Race National Championship over Memorial Day Weekend on the San Diego Bay.
Yale won the national championship and was followed in the top five by Georgetown, St. Mary's College, Boston College and College of Charleston.
The wind remained light throughout the championship and despite cloudy skies, there was significant boat traffic on San Diego Bay, leading to very challenging conditions. Only 16 teams qualified for this event and all of the teams were well prepared and the racing was very tight.
Navy fought hard through the initial round and was very close to advancing to the top eight, but a protest decision in Navy's race against Brown and a loss to Santa Barbara in the last race of the round sealed the Midshipmen's fate and the team finished 10th overall with a 7-8 record.
Navy's skippers were Michael Popp, Patrick Snow, Gary Prieto and Michael Madigan. Megan Hough, Molly Hanson and Michelle Katz served as crews. Aaron Hull, Molly Robertson, Peter Hogan and Jimmy Madigan were also on hand ready to play if the conditions called for it.
The Mids recently placed 11th out of 16 teams at the ICSA Women's National Championship and Navy will finish the season this week with the ICSA Coed National Championship from Tuesday to Friday in San Diego.
