Box Score

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Despite few offensive opportunities, Drake took advantage when it had chances and defeated the Navy women's soccer team, 2-0, Friday night at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. The Mids will look ahead to Sunday's match against Bowling Green, which kicks off at 2:30 p.m.

"I thought we played well tonight, we kept the ball, we created chance after chance and we did a lot of things well, but we were not able to finish and Drake was just better inside the box," Navy head coach Carin Gabarra said. "We had chances and they had chances, but they scored the goals. We have to look at this match from the perspective of that we need to get better in order to win games moving forward."

Navy (2-5-1) held possession for the majority of the match and outshot its opponent, 19-5, and held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. Drake (5-0-1), however, cashed in on its limited opportunities, scoring two goals on three shots on net.

The Bulldogs found its lone first-half offensive opportunity in the 25th minute. Linda Fiorito dashed down the far sidelines and sent a pass parallel to the top of the 18-yard box for teammate Rachel Wanninger, who struck a bouncing shot that slipped underneath the reach of Navy goalkeeper Dayton Wetherby (Wesley Chapel, Fla.).

Navy looked to respond in the 31st minute. Freshman Regan McQuain (Lafayette, Calif.) slipped past one Drake defender and sent her first shot on net, but was deflected by a Bulldog defender that came crashing in. McQuain regained possession of the ball and found herself one-on-one with Drake goalkeeper Brooke Dennis. The freshman forward looked to chip her shot over the diving goalie, but Dennis stretched out and denied the shot to keep the Mids off the board.

The Mids continued to challenge the Bulldog defense in the second half, spraying seven shots, three of which were on net, but Navy was unable to convert.

Drake then earned its first corner kick of the night in the 81st minute. Following the cross in by Tawny Carroll, the ball bounced around inside the box between a few Drake and Navy players before Drake's Hannah Wilder positioned herself to head in her first goal of the season to put the match away.

Wetherby finished the match with two goals allowed in 80:10 minutes played. Freshman goalkeeper Sydney Fortson relieved Wetherby for the final 9:50 and tallied one save.
