Navy Intercollegiate Sailing Competes in Three Events

Sept. 19, 2016

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy intercollegiate sailing team hit the road this past weekend for three different regattas north of Annapolis. Navy competed at the Hatch Brown Trophy, the Nevins Trophy and the N.Y. Maritime Fall Open.

The farthest trip was to the Hatch Brown Trophy in Boston where 19 strong teams from around the country battled on the Charles River. With the wind funneling down city streets and shifting unpredictably, the Charles has been a challenge to college sailors for decades. Navy has a feel for the conditions early on and got off to a strong start, challenging for the lead throughout the early part of Saturday. Consistency proved hard to come by however and the team wound up seventh overall. Michael Madigan and Ana Mier finished ninth in A division while Peter Hogan and Sarah Barkley were ninth in B and Parker Loftus and Molly Hanson were sixth in C division.

The major event in the conference this weekend was the Nevins Trophy, hosted by the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Navy got off to a strong start as well here, but also dropped to seventh overall out of 20 teams at the end. The finish was a bit tighter as Navy would end up with 380 points, tied with Coast Guard but losing the tiebreaker and one point behind fifth place Roger Williams to place seventh. Patrick Snow, Mary Morocco and Nicholas Gartner finished fourth in A division while Max Brill and Molly Robertson were seventh in B and Gary Prieto came in seventh in C division.

At the N.Y. Maritime Fall Open, Navy was able to field two of the 17 teams in attendance. One of the Navy teams came in third overall, with third place divisional finishes from Jimmy Madigan and Carlyn Sawdy-Bowes in A and Hannah Hughes and Joshua Walton in B. Navy's other team wound up eighth overall, with Jessica McJones and Gabriella Shyne finishing 11th in A division while Brittney Slook and An Bo Hyun were eighth in B.
