Jan. 2, 2017 CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Two-time NCAA qualifier Jadaen Bernstein (Jr / Glen Gardner, N.J.) defeated hometown favorite Sean Mappes to open Monday's action, ensuring the Navy wrestling junior would place at the 2017 Southern Scuffle held at McKenzie Arena at Chattanooga. Bernstein, seeded seventh at ranked 17th at 174 pounds, lost his final two matches of the day to place eighth in the tournament. Navy placed 19th with 22 points among 23 teams and numerous individuals wrestling unattached.
Bernstein scored the match-winning takedown (2-1) against Mappes with 21 seconds left in the second period to advance to the consolation quarterfinals against Duke's Connor Bass. Bernstein opened up a 5-1 lead midway through the second period against Bass before the Blue Devil scored three points in 22 seconds to trail by just one heading into the final period. Bass knotted the match at five apiece just 10 seconds into the third and neither wrestler was able to score the go-ahead points, forcing extra minutes. Bass was able to get Bernstein on his back for the pin 40 seconds into sudden victory to send Bernstein to the seventh/eighth-place match.
Fourth-seeded Taylor Lujan opened up a 6-0 lead early in the first period and never looked back as he defeated Bernstein, 16-9, to take seventh.
Bernstein, along with 141-pound Jared Prince (Fr / Safety Harbor, Fla.), 149-pound Corey Wilding (Jr / Pittsburgh, Pa.) and 157-pound Zach Elvin (Fr / Harrisburg, Pa.) opened Monday's competition needing just one win to place at one of the nation's premier wrestling tournaments. Bernstein, however, was the long Mid to advance as the other three suffered tough losses.
Prince dropped an 8-5 decision to Missouri's Zach Synon and Elvin was tripped up by fourth-seeded Jake Short of Minnesota, 6-1. Wilding held a 3-1 advantage over fourth-seeded Laike Gardner of Lehigh heading into the final period, but Gardner scored the match-tying takedown with 24 seconds left and went on to win the match, 5-3, with a 2-point nearfall with 17 seconds remaining.
The Midshipmen will be back in action this weekend when a handful of wrestlers will compete at the Franklin & Marshall Open on Saturday (9:00 am), while the varsity lineup will battle Maryland in College Park on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
