ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- After dropping a pair of matches to top-10 programs Penn and Yale in the last week-and-a-half, Navy squash head coach Craig Dawson held one of his periodic challenge matches. The results paid dividends as the lineup shuffle paved the way for a pair of Navy shutouts (9-0) Friday and Saturday over #25 Hobart and #35 Haverford.
The 13th-ranked Mids improved to 17-5 on the year, while also pushing their series advantage to 31-6 against Hobart and 20-0 against Haverford.
Michael Kacergis (Fr / Malvern, Pa.), who has enjoyed a sensational rookie campaign, and senior Will Walker (Scarborough, N.Y.) flip-flopped at the #5 and #6 positions this weekend. Kacergis reached the 20-win milestone (20-2) with 3-0 sweeps over Hobart's Graham Henderson (11-5, 11-6, 11-3) and Haverford's Yash Singh (11-4, 11-2, 11-6). Walker, meanwhile, moved to the #6 spot and captured a pair of wins to improve to 11-8.
Alex Patricolo (So / Southampton, N.Y.) jumped from the exhibition position (#10) to #8 on the ladder and he, too, earned back-to-back 3-0 victories against Hobart's Ben Shapiro (11-5, 11-6, 11-4) and Haverford's Shilin Jog (11-0, 11-2, 11-3). Patricolo is now 7-1 on the year.
In one of the best matches of the weekend, Owen Davis (Fr / Rydal, Pa.) scored a 3-1 victory in a marathon match against Hobart's Jack Shannon. Shannon won game one 13-11, before Davis evened the match with 18-16 triumph in the second. Davis went on to win out, but both remaining games were tight at 11-9 and 13-11. He would have a much easier path against Haverford foe Aaron Horwitz, whom he defeated, 11-5, 11-5, 11-9, on Saturday afternoon. Davis stands second on the team in the wins column with a 17-5 record.
Navy will play its final regular-season match of the season next Sunday when it plays host to Franklin & Marshall at the Halsey Field House International Squash Courts beginning at 2:00 pm. Navy will honor its two senior members - team captain Randy Beck (Lafayette Hill, Pa) and Will Walker.
