April 24, 2017 ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy intercollegiate sailing team competed in three regattas this past weekend. Due to its top-nine finish at the MAISA Women's Championship, Navy has qualified for the College Sailing Women's Nationals in Charleston, S.C. from May 23-26.
Navy hosted the MAISA Women's Championship this past weekend. The event featured 17 teams and determined which nine schools would earn a MAISA berth at the College Sailing Women's Nationals. With rain on Saturday and variable northeast winds throughout the weekend, it was a tough weekend on the water. Navy had its ups and downs on the course and wound up eighth overall, good enough to advance to Nationals.
Hannah Hughes and Sarah Barkley finished sixth in A division while Jessica McJones, Molly Robertson and Molly Hanson were ninth in B.
Navy also had two coed competitions over the weekend. Close to home, Georgetown hosted the Arrigan Memorial Regatta. This event featured nine teams sailing in a combined division format, with two boats from each school in every race. The regatta was closely contested at the top and Navy was able to come from behind in Sunday to claim the overall victory. In the combined fleet, Jimmy Madigan and Karma Richards came in first place while Nicholas Gartner and Emma Remis were fifth.
The third event of the weekend was the Admiral's Cup, hosted by the Merchant Marine Academy. Unfortunately, the Navy team that traveled the farthest did the least amount of racing, as light winds allowed for only three races per division. Navy wound up 13th overall out of 18. Max Brill and Kent Mathes finished 13th in A division, while Parker Loftus and Manuel Inserni-Pagan came in 10th in B and Tyler Fleig was 12th in C.
