CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Navy intercollegiate sailing team placed fifth of 16 teams at the ICSA Laser Performance Team Racing Championship in Charleston, S.C. over the Memorial Day weekend. Charleston won the Team Racing title and was followed by Yale and Georgetown in the top three.
Saturday featured southwest winds at 8-18 knots and as much as three knots of current in the afternoon. Navy started strong, but lost some tough races in the max ebb towards the end of the day and was in a tight pack at the end of the day that were all on the edge of advancing on to the top-eight second round. Navy started the day strong again on Sunday and advanced on to the gold round.
After the round of eight, Navy fell just short of the final four in a fifth-place tie with Hobart & William Smith with 12-10 records.
The event was scheduled to run through Monday, but a questionable forecast led the organizers to finish the regatta in two days.
Navy's team consisted of skippers Patrick Snow, Gary Prieto, Peter Hogan and Michael Madigan with crews Molly Robertson, Ana Mier, Mary Morocco, Molly Hanson and Brittney Slook. The shore crew consisted of Hannah Hughes, Manuel Inserni-Pagan, Jimmy Madigan and Kent Mathes.
Navy will next compete in the ICSA Gill Coed Nationals with the semifinal round beginning Tuesday.
