Box Score Sept. 3, 2017 STANFORD, Calif. - Faced with the task of taking on the fifth-ranked team in the nation on the road, the Navy women's soccer team battled throughout on Sunday, but the host Stanford Cardinal were too much as they defeated the Midshipmen by a score of 7-0. Playing at Cagan Stadium, the Mids (4-3) played the Cardinal (4-1) tight through the opening 45 minutes, but five second-half goals sealed the visitors' fate.
"Stanford is a rightfully a top-five team and perennial national championship contender and they showed that today," remarked head coach Carin Gabarra. "We've played Stanford three times prior to this afternoon and every game was a one-goal game, but today they were making everything. That's an extremely talented team."
"We pride ourselves on playing the best teams and learning lessons in every game we play. We're going to take quite a few of those home from this weekend and we look to getting better as we head down the home stretch of non-conference games. It's all a part of the process. We know that Patriot League play is where these lessons will be tested."
Stanford came into Sunday as the number five team in the NCAA with substantial wins earlier this season over 2016 NCAA Tournament participations in the form of a 4-0 victory over Marquette, 5-0 decision versus Wisconsin and a 4-0 margin of victory over Georgetown.
The host Cardinal controlled the majority of possession throughout the first half and it was reflected on the scoreboard as Stanford notched goals in the seventh and 27th minutes to go up 2-0 over the Mids.
Navy's best opportunity to cut into Stanford's lead occurred in the minute before the halftime intermission as Eleanor Pratt (Jr., New Orleans, La.) put a corner kick into the box where eventually Ty Horne (Fr., Hattiesburg, Miss.) got her head on the ball for a shot on goal.
In the second half, the Cardinal extended its advantage over the Mids with five goals. With the score at 4-0 through the 75th minute, Stanford found the back of the goal three times over the final 15 minutes.
For the game, Stanford outshot Navy, 35-1 with a 15-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Goalkeeper Sydney Fortson (So., Claremont, Calif.) played 81:02 minutes for the Mids and made eight saves.
All 24 Mids that travelled to California appeared in the game for Navy.
The Mids will be back in action this coming week with a pair of non-conference home games. First up, Navy will host the James Madison Dukes on Thursday at 7 p.m. before welcoming the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils on Sunday at 1 p.m.
