ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy's intercollegiate sailing team concluded its fall regular season this past weekend at the MAISA Fall Coed Championship/War Memorial Regatta.
The wind started out of the northeast at 10-20 knots and then shifted around to the northwest during the first day. The wind speed stayed consistent through the afternoon and racing was tight throughout the day.
Navy started strong and finished half of the races in the top three, but made a few mistakes in some other races. The Midshipmen closed out the first day of racing in third place and within striking distance of the leaders.
On the second day of racing, the wind whipped from the west at 8-15 knots. It was a puffy and shifty wind, which helped Navy sail well for the second-straight day. The Midshipmen were unable to close the gap on the leaders and finished third out of 18 teams.
Parker Loftus (Jr., Chatham, Mass.),
Brittney Slook (Jr., Middletown, N.J.) and
Sally Johnson (Fr., Richmond, Va.) finished fourth in the A division, while
JC Hermus (Fr., Bellport, N.Y.),
Ana Mier (Sr., San Juan, Puerto Rico) and
Kent Mathes (Jr., Anacortes, Wash.) placed third in the B division.
Navy also had a team sail in the J22 East Coast Championship, hosted by the Severn Sailing Association. The fleet consisted of 13 non-collegiate teams, most of which had just competed at the World Championship in Annapolis earlier this fall. The Midshipmen quartet of
Jack Carminati (Fr., Youngstown, N.Y.),
Tyler Fleig (Sr., Portsmouth, R.I.),
Nicholas Gartner (Jr., St. Thomas, Virgin Islands) and
Fiona Lobon (Fr., Brookline, N.Y.) were sixth overall in the field.
Jessica McJones (Jr., Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) finishes the fall season for Navy at the ICSA Women's Singlehanded National Championships in Macatawa Bay, Mich., this coming weekend.
