Box Score 3 ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– Navy's
Jack Dabek (Fr., Dublin, Ohio) and
Andrew Ton (So., Milpitas, Calif.) advanced to the championship match of the top doubles draw at this weekend's Spider Invitational men's tennis tournament that concluded Sunday in Richmond, Va.
"The players were able to enjoy a very competitive environment this weekend," said Navy head coach
Chris Garner. "We definitely saw some progress in a number of areas, but also had a chance to see areas we can keep improving throughout the fall."
Dabek and Ton competed in the eight-team A doubles bracket. The Navy pairing opened the draw with a 6-4 win over the James Madison duo of
Paul Mendoza and
Tate Steinour. The Mids then defeated the VCU team of Javier Amantegui and Philip Mobius by the score of 6-2 to reach the championship match. Virginia's Ammar Alhaqbani and
William Woodall posted a 6-1 victory over the Mids in the final.
Ton advanced to the championship side of the 16-player A singles draw with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Radford's Rodrigo Megalhaes in the first round. Ton would fall in a third-set tiebreaker to VCU's Arvid Noren in the second round before posting a straight-set win over Alhaqbani. Ton earned a fifth-place finish in the flight with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Old Dominion's Oliver Tobisch.
Dabek opened the eight-player F singles bracket with a 6-2, 6-3 win over William & Mary's Tristan Bautil. He would then post a 3-6, 6-7, 6-1 victory over the College of Charleston's Robby Krick in the semifinal round of the flight. Longwood's Francesco Iaccarino held off Dabek, 7-6, 3-6, 7-6, in the championship match.
"Andrew was able to finish with a 3-1 record in the top bracket and had two good wins in doubles with Jack," said Garner. "Jack himself had a nice run to the finals of his bracket. He played a great match and the experience will help him as he continues this fall."
Also competing in the tournament were Navy's
Matthew Lee (Jr., San Diego, Calif.) and
Peter Lohrbach (So., Little Neck, N.Y.). The two played singles and formed a doubles team that earned third place in the E flight. After a first-round bye, the Mids defeated Virginia's
Spencer Bozsik and
Jerome Romualdez, 6-2, in the second round. The pair would fall in the semifinal round by the score of 6-2 to Richmond's George Lovitt and Joe Nardini. Lee and Lohrbach went on to post a 6-2 victory over Old Dominion's Justin Herrera and Harrison Hunter in the third-place match.
"Matthew was able to brush off a tough start to the tourney to finish on a high note with two solid wins in singles," said Garner. "Peter had competitive matches every time he stepped on the court and was able to break through in his last one.
Navy will next be in action this coming weekend when the Mids play host to the Navy Blue Invite Friday through Sunday.
