ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team competed at three road events this past weekend, with the Midshipmen notching at fifth-place at the ICSA Coed Showcase in Boston, Mass., to advance to the showcase final.
The first coed showcase featured 36 teams sailing in two regattas on the Charles River in Boston. Navy was one of 18 teams to earn a seed in the event. Wind was fickle on the Charles River this weekend and many races were abandoned after starting due to the wind dying out altogether. The Midshipmen got off to a rough start following tough conditions, but they improved -- as did the conditions -- on Saturday.
On Sunday, Navy got off to a strong start in the regatta with three race wins over the first three races. The Midshipmen continued to move up the standings throughout the day on Sunday. The wind eventually died down on the final day and racing ended early due to the conditions.
After 10 races in each division, Navy placed fifth overall. In the A division,
Connor Bayless (So., Annapolis, Md.) and
Kimmie Leonard (Fr., Annapolis, Md.) finished 13th, while
JC Hermus (Fr., Bellport, N.Y.) and
Ana Mier (Sr., San Juan, Puerto Rico) were second overall in the B division. With the fifth-place finish, Navy qualifies as one of the top-18 teams to compete at the ICSA Coed Showcase Regatta in two weeks in St. Mary's City, Md.
At the Tom Curtis Regatta hosted by Georgetown, the Midshipmen were one of six teams to compete in the regatta. With three boats in the field, the Midshipmen placed second overall with
Gray Benson (Fr., Oxford, Md.) and
Madeline Pruzan (So., Roanoke, Va.) finishing second. In challenging conditions on the Potomac River, the duo of
Sean Linden (So., Brightwaters, N.Y.) and
Bartholomew Winn (So., Carlisle, Pa.) finished eighth out of 18 boats, while
Tyler Fleig (Sr., Portsmouth, R.I.) and
Holly Koerwer (So., Shrewsbury, N.J.) placed 12th.
In the New York Maritime Fall Open, Navy had a squad compete in the 12-team regatta. The Midshipmen finished 12th overall at the event.
Louis Margay (Fr., Chester Springs, Pa.) and
Fiona Lobon (Fr., Brookline, N.Y.) were seventh overall in the A division and
Jack Carminati (Fr., Youngstown, N.Y.) and
Lucy Ackerman (Fr., Lake Forest Park, Wash.) placed eighth in the B division.
Next week, the Midshipmen have another busy weekend with three road events. Navy travels to Kings Point, N.Y. for the Kings Point Dinghy Open and also heads to Providence, R.I., for the ICSA Women's Showcase. The Mids also travel to St. Mary's City, Md., this coming weekend for the Oyster Bowl.
